My partner and I are trying for a baby, my last period was on July 17th and we have had plenty of unprotected after that. I have to have some dental work done today, specifically x-rays and a root canal or removal of a molar. It would be too soon for a pregnancy test to come back positive if we are pregnant so what would be the safest course to take with this dental work? I don't want to accidentaly harm our child if there is one.
TTC and dental work?
You will be perfectly fine - even when you get an x-ray done at the dentist's office, they will put a protective shield on your body (which will cover your tummy as well). I had a root canal done while I was pregnant - I didn't know I was pregnant at that time - and I was perfectly fine, and the baby was perfectly fine and healthy as well. The x-ray that they take at the dental office is directed specifically on your jaw area, so it won't ever get into your tummy, in case you are pregnant, and the radiation dosage from the x-ray is so low that the risks are so insignificant - you get more radiation from the sun than from that dental x-ray.
So go ahead, it is best to get any dental work done now instead of when you are really pregnant or far along - you can even tell your dentist that there might be a possibility that you are pregnant - just so that the dentist is aware of your condition or possible condition and will ensure the best protection for your unborn baby. BUt rest assure that you will be fine.
Goodluck!
Reply:Tell the doctor. X-rays are okay, they won't kill a baby..they just don't want to any excess exposure.
