OK, I'm skint and need dental work, my brother's a dentist but I know he just scraped a pass at Uni...

should I just go for the free dental work? am I risking my teeth unneccessarily

OK, I'm skint and need dental work, my brother's a dentist but I know he just scraped a pass at Uni...
How long has he been a dentist, since uni? If he's only just started, I'd be a bit cautious - although he did pass, so he clearly knows enough to be considered fit to work as a dentist. If he's been working for some time, then he may well have improved anyway.

Bear in mind, too, that you just happen to have inside knowledge about his qualifications - you could pay to go to another dentist who did just as badly at their studies!
Reply:evidently he's a good dentist or else he wouldn't have his license...

Reply:I'd say a lot depends on what kind of work you need. If it's a couple of small fillings, go see yoru brother. If you need a root canal, lots of cosmetic work, etc, think about finding someone with more experience and a proven track record.

I would like to get cosmetic dental work but can't afford it even with insurance what are my options?

I need dental work as well and live in pensacola fl. also I'm afraid of the dentist

Tough luck. Welcome to the plight of the middle class. Take out a loan if you want the cosmetic work so badly, otherwise stick to necessary work.
Reply:No money...probably no dental work....scared of the dentist? Ativan...they give it now!
Reply:knock them out with a hammer then their have to give you new ones GAPPY!!!!
Reply:ask your dentist if the offer some kind of assistance sometimes you can get on a payment plan with them.
Reply:Ever read from the web that some dental clinic offers installment plan / credit terms.
Reply:Check out local colleges and universities for dental programs, most do take insurance and do provide low cost service (granted it will be provided by a student under the supervision of a dentist)

I am in serious need of dental work & becoming desperate for pain relief--are there philanthropists who help?

I am 47, newly divorced, trying to get back into the work force after 15 yrs., and hopefully experiencing new relationships as time goes. I used to be remembered by my healthy %26amp; genuine smile...it has simply fallen apart over the years because I have lost or broken almost all of my teeth from my cuspids back in all four sects. I only have 1 upper/1 lower that can chew %26amp; they are chipping away...infections are severe %26amp; frequent, pain is regular. Just walking into a dentist's office costs me $1G every time...I can not afford this...how do I confidently present myself to employers, how can I have a relationship with another person if I cannot feel comfortable with the odor/germs from the death in my mouth?

Aren't there resources/dental pros who can assist someone like me? I would sooo appreciate serious info/open avenues...Thanks in advance.

I am in serious need of dental work %26amp; becoming desperate for pain relief--are there philanthropists who help?
Call your local Family Services office and ask if they have a local resource list with dentists who sometimes donate their time to help low income persons with their dental needs. In our city, for example, we have something called the Samaritan Center where dentists do this once a week at no cost to the public. You do have to show proof of income, however. It sounds like you need to have your remaining teeth pulled and be fitted for dentures. I hate to say this, but employers have a hard time hiring anyone with bad teeth. I guess it's because you are representing their company and it may hurt their business. Starting a relationship will also be a problem. You'd be better off with no teeth than bad teeth. Also, infections from bad teeth can sometimes injure your heart.

Reply:I would like to recommend to have your dental work done in Thailand which is now, Thailand is home to a growing trend known as "Medical Tourism" as you may have seen in CBS TV' 60 minutes and in Time Magazine. Many doctors and dentists are trained in Europe and US. Many of them are The American Board in their related field. The hospitals and clinics are high International Standard. The price is at 1/3 - 1/4 back to US. For example, The Denture is approx USD 200 - 500 max. (depend on how many teeth). The implants are approx. USD 2,000 - 500 and etc. The airfare is approx USD 1,000 USA-BKK-USA (The travel agency that I used to buy from them) The hotel range is start from USD 15 up to 3 stars at USD 30 or more for 4/5 stars hotels. You can buy a meal at USD 1.5 (not in big restaurant). People there can speak English. I would like to recommend one of the medical agency in Thailand that will not charge you for service fee and they have a many deal with many good doctors and hospitals that you will have not to pay for more than the walk in price and sometimes you get a better price. You may visit at www.healthylivingvacation.com They are willing to help you find a very good dentist to match with your budget at a high quality. They can provide you also the travelling arrangement.

Where can I find help gettin dental work for the unemployed.?

Need to have some dental work done but have been on a medical leave from work for a year and have no insurance and no income.

Where can I find help gettin dental work for the unemployed.?
Check with your local DHHR office they provide temp. medical and dental assistance to people unemployed.
Reply:See if there are any dental schools in or near your town. Usually they charge a nominal fee or maybe they can work out a deal for you.
Reply:go to a university that has a dental school, most of the time they will take care of your needs free of charge because the students are working on you with the supervision of their clinical advisors, and you tend to get the state of the art work because they are always trying new ideas and need people to try them on. Good luck!

How does a dentist work with dental technicans?

how does dentist work with dental technicans? how does the process work!! like when u go to the dentist, and u need dentures!!

How does a dentist work with dental technicans?
You consult with your dentist first about dentures or partials. They should have a list of different quality dentures, the higher the quality, the higher the price. Decide which is the best one for you. THey should then work you up a treatment plan with all of the work on it (if you have to have teeth pulled or bones trimmed or anything else), so that you can see what the total cost is going to be. If you are getting a full denture, the dr should help you select a shape and shade of tooth.

The dentist then takes an impression of your mouth and gets it to the lab. The lab makes a model of your mouth and it is then covered in wax and teeth added. Some drs do what is called a wax tryin, where you try the wax dentures in to make sure they are what you want and you like the look. Then send them back to the lab for any adjustments. it is then processed and made into a denture.

You try it in, and the dentist adjusts any sore spots, and you're on yer way. This can all be done in one day, in most cases. With otu the wax try in, anyway.
Reply:The dentist takes an impression %26amp; pours up models in stone gets a wax bite, checks the shade of any remaining teeth. If no teeth are left will do a try in if immediate denture can be processed first time if not after try in . Doc W
Reply:Some dentists have their own way to make them in their office or some send the impressions to the lab where it is processed. They use a material to pour into the impression this sets and makes a model of your mouth/teeth/gums. This model is used to make the denture. This is done by placing the materials to make the denture on the model and letting them set.

Can someone PLEASE HELP me get an estimate, on dental work?

I havent been to a dentist in a while and I know I need a lot of work done. I just got dental Insurance through my work ,first dental health PPO but I know that I will still have to pay out of pocket. I dont have much money, so I need an estimate on how much it will cost. 2 of my permanant teeth have fallen out. I also need a cleaning, and some of my teeth to be filed down to be straight, not to mention fillings for cavaties.I know, I know I should take better care of my teeth. Please someone give me an estimate. Thanks so much!!!!

Also, if you know an afordable dentist in Southern California htat would be great

Can someone PLEASE HELP me get an estimate, on dental work?
One thousand per implant, two thousand per crown, and a thousand for xrays and exam work. And an additional thousand, to two, for the cavities, but if some of the cavities need root canals, add an additional thousand for each. Good luck, a lot of dentists do offer payment plans, so, it's not all bad.
Reply:alot of money probably
Reply:Get the estimate from your dentist!
Reply:Call 1 800 dentist...they can point you in the right direction of a Dental College. You can get alot of work done for free or at a fraction of the cost if you allow the graduating class to work on you for practice. They have a real dentist supervising but if you don't mind.. do it that way.. save you alot of money and you get to help educate someone.
Reply:If you haven't been to a dentist for awhile they will take x-rays, pano, hwich is a full x-ray of your mouth. From there they will consult what you need to have done and of course what is affordable with your budget. It sounds like your teeth aren't the best so they will probably have to numb your area before they even do a cleaning which will cost extra. Your looking at a total of about 1200 bucks before you are done.
Reply:hi, pick up your phone, call a dentist, ask for a general quote on your problem, they all will tell you, an inspection is necessary,....simjk1
Reply:I can't help you with picking a dentist, except to say that I always ask friends for references on things like this. I do know about getting estimates. You just call up a dentist and explain what you want. I'm guessing most dentists (unless they're already extremely busy) would be happy to see you to do such an estimate. They will probably charge you a fee, however. Just make sure you clarify what that fee will be before you get the estimate.
Reply:My dentist charges $75 per filling and $125 for an extraction. Cleanings are on a per minute basis and are very reasonable.

And to smarty... alot is not a word in the English language. There needs to be a space between the a and lot.
Reply:You could probably get an estimate from your dentist at your first visit, he/she will take X rays and give you a visual examination to determine what you need. Fillings will come before filing down etc. because it's more for health than looks.

Most dentists will give you a list of what you'll need with an estimated price if you ask.
Reply:I can't give you an estimate but I'm sure if you call around and get a few opinions, different dentists in your area can give you some ballpark figures. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Is it okay to go to dental students if you need a lot of work done?

Would it be better to stick with one dentist? The dental school near me takes people on first come first serve basis and you cannot ask for the same person twice though you may actually be able to get the same person twice. I've started haveing pain, so my teeth are definately getting worse but I'm having trouble affording what the dentists charge just for consultations, let alone the actual work.

Is it okay to go to dental students if you need a lot of work done?
Would you rather not go at all? They do a pretty good job. My friend has been going to my other friend's dental school to get all her teeth problems fixed. She had a lot of cavities because she could never afford a dentist before. Now she has healthy teeth and isn't broke. It's better than having the teeth die and fall out due to lack of care.
Reply:I would say it depends on your comfort level. Even though they are only dental students they are working under the direction of licensed dentist.

I see no harm in going, plus it is good practice for up and coming dentist.
Reply:dental students need test subjects. besides you have about 32 teeth in your mouth, whats it matter if the dental student accidentally removes the wrong one
Reply:Dental schools are a good deal. The student is being graded on the work and the work is inspected by their teacher. You get a good price with great work under those circumstances. Go for it!
Reply:My wife has had lots of work done no problems. teachers are always near..
Reply:Dental students NEED challenging patients while they are honing their skills. You'll pay less if you go to a school to have your work done (especially cleanings) and there are certified, experienced teacher-dentists overseeing their students' work throughout the visit. By all means, take advantage!
Reply:I am in a dental school, and I can say that although we are still learning, we try to do our very best , besides we have to do a lot of phantom work before we are alotted any patients, so its not just out of the blue that a patient is alotted to any student, we have to do hours of work on a phantom first, besides we know that watever we do will be evaluated by the teacher, so I guess you can go to a dental college, and rest assured.

I have burning mouth syndrome now for 5 years.Dental work brought it back again.?

I have been on a drug called clonazepam for 5 years for this problem. In the beginning I took a small dosage.025 and it did the trick. I had more dental work and it flarred up again.Had to increase the dosage to .050. More dental work 3 weeks ago and it has flarred up so bad,that3 mg isn't helping much.HELP

I have burning mouth syndrome now for 5 years.Dental work brought it back again.?
You being on such a hefty dose of clonazepam makes me realize how hard and painful this is for you. In regards to the treament and diagnosis of your burning mouth syndrome, have you had it diagnosed by a second opinion doctor? I ask because it may be a fungal infection that has flared up. Or it could be a case of erosive lichen planus. Either way there is treatment that involves steroid therapy and/or antifungals.

Dental treatment sometimes involves drying the mouth out considerably. When this happens your nerve endings could get the sensation of a stressful episode and so they begin to fire off, causing you pain. Go see about a 100% second or third doctor opinion so that maybe they can treat your disease and just not the symptoms. There are oral rinses that contain an anesthetic that may help you, rincinol is what comes to mind. I've given this to a patient of mine who had some Burning mouth symptoms that she said helped her quite a bit.
Reply:I don't have an answer but I've too got this burning sensation in my month for two years and I didn't know there was a medication for it. I have just learned to live with it when mine gets really bad I just take normal pain killers(syndols) maybe that all you need cause your body gets customed to one medication that it doesn't help anymore.

Can i go to school for dental assistant and work for orthodontics?

I was just wondering, if i went to school for dental assistant, if i'd have to do something extra or different to work in orthodontics? I asked the receptionist at my dentist office, but she was no help. Thanks!

Can i go to school for dental assistant and work for orthodontics?
You don't have to.You don't even have to go to school to be a dental assistant. You can be trained on the job. It's much better to go to school to become certified, but not needed in all states.

So you could also be trained work with braces.

Good luck
Reply:You can go to school, but may be able to get on as a trainee in an ortho office. Write a letter or call the ortho offices near you and maybe someone will take you under their wing and train you. Dental assisting schools can be overpriced for what you get, so be careful. Most only teach general dentistry so you would still need to be trained by an orthodontist. Check into a local college or vocational school it may be less expensive.

Ortho is fun, as an assistant you get to do much more for the patient aside from holding the suction and handing instruments to the dentist.
Reply:Yes, you can go to school to be a dental assistant, and then go on to work at an orthodontist's office if that's where you want to be!

Entry-level dental assisting courses will teach you dental terminology, charting, oral anatomy, suctioning, retraction, radiology, infection control, sterilization techniques... you will learn how to pour models and pass instruments, as well as learn the names for them. There's so much to learn, but the basics will be covered.

Healthcare Provider CPR w/AED is another class you want to take if you don't already have it. You'll need your hepatitis series of shots, as well as your TB.

Some states require certification in Radiation, Health %26amp; Safety in order to take xrays. Some states also require certification in chairside assisting (CDA) or state licensure in order to perform expanded duties. If you go to www.danb.org, you can find your states info.

There's no reason you can't work for an orthodontist if that's what you want to do. Having taken the entry-level course, it'll help you get your foot in the door, then you can learn the legal tasks allowed by orthodontic assistants in your state.

You could always find an ortho office that will allow you to 'shadow' thier assistants, or a general office for that matter... it will give you an idea of what's actually done besides just suctioning and passing instruments....

Best of luck to you!
Reply:My sister never went to school at all and she works in the orthodontics, how ever she's been doing this job for 27 years and she's making 23.00 an hour. This is in the south east MI. area. I do know this same Orthodontist hired a high school girl but they weren't giving her enough days so she quit. She was starting out at 8.50 an hour. So I would do research like you have been. I just thought I would let you know this short story. Good luck.

I'm in desperate need of Dental work but insurance covers a measley $1500 of the $6k bill?

Does anyone know of a dentist in the St Louis area willing to work out a payment plan of some sort for dental work any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in desperate need of Dental work but insurance covers a measley $1500 of the $6k bill?
call your local United Way, they will refer you to a dentist that takes payments... good luck, and feel better.
Reply:Try a college or university where they teach dentistry. My nephew got a lot of work done cheap at one.

Oh, and vote for democrats. Then maybe we'll have a decent health plan in the future...
Reply:not sure if they have it there as well but here in holland you can also go to univercity's where they study to become dentist and you can have work done there (guided by pro's ofcourse) and they won't charge or charge way much less, start looking for medical schools around you and call to see if they have something like that there.

else just start calling some dentists in your area and just friendly ask and explain the situation

good luck
Reply:Yoo can look into a dental school (not sure if you can use your insurance though). Most dentists are getting away from allowing patients to make payments. There are companies out there that will loan money for services. Dental Fee Plan and Care Credit, but the interest can be high and if your credit is not perfect you wont get approved. You may do better at your own bank or use a low interest credit card.

Also, ask your dentist if some of the work could be postponed until next year to utilize those benefits. Have to look at your teeth as an investment in your future, since you want to have them for many more years. Sucks that dentistry is so expensive and insurance only pays a small part. Another thing is to ask the dentist for a discount if you pay up front. If the dentist is taking Care credit or Dental Fee plan he is already giving a cut to the credit company. He/she may pass the savings to you if your paying yourself.

Good luck!

Is mouthwash safe to use with dental work?

I have a newer crown that was placed on April '07. I was just wondering if it was safe to use mouthwash (Mint Scope) with dental work (I.E. My crown).

Is mouthwash safe to use with dental work?
Your crown is covered with a ceramic material that is harder than teeth ...it is actually glass. Mouthwashes will not adversely affect your dental work. Ceramic materials 20 years ago were not as stable as today's ceramics and the older crowns could be affected, but not today.

One of the best mouthwashes is warm mildly salty water and its cheap and very effective ...as effective as any commercial brand. Also, using baking soda as a substitute for toothpaste works great and baking soda and salt both control the growth of bacteria in your mouth.

Just a note: I am not a fan of these whitening techniques ...hydrogen peroxide and bleaches can leave your tooth surfaces more porous, therefore more prone to stain. You shouldn't use them at home as too strong a concentration can cause problems ...use the natural cleaners, like salt water or baking soda.

I am a Dental Ceramist of 15 years!
Reply:I had 4 crowns and never had trouble with the standard mouth washes. I have also used bleach water.
Reply:Mouthwash OK, but don't be putting bleach, hydrogen peroxide, etc. in your mouth [NOT HEALTHY}. Geesh the things people want to do!!!
Reply:Yes you can. You can use anything. The crown is made with a porcelin overlay. That porcelin will not stain or change color. They do not absorb anything like a real tooth would. If you bleech, it will not bleech. The color you got is what you get.
Reply:yes they wouldn't put them on if it was please use mouthwash

How soon after you get some dental work and some xrays is it safe to try to conceive?

Just got a crown put in,cavity taken care of,xray done and got my teeth cleaned. How soon is it safe to try to conceive ?I read on a book to get dental work done before trying to get pregnant but was wondering how long you need to wait...

How soon after you get some dental work and some xrays is it safe to try to conceive?
Straight away, unless you have swallowed your dentures!
Reply:Right away, it is because of the radiation exposure to the bay, nothing else. I had to have a root canal done in my 4 month %26amp; only had that tooth xrayed (w/obs aproval) and my son was born perfectly healthy.

I need a good amount of dental work done?

I need a good amount of dental work down but my insurance isn't going to cover enough of the cost. I heard about colleges offering dentistry at a discount along with state assistance. My credit isn't that great so I doubt I could go that route. Can somebody give some advice as to what to do? I live in the state of TN.

I need a good amount of dental work done?
If you don't have much money and have poor credit, then you should have taken better care of your teeth. Sounds like you are looking for a "free ride" at the public taxpayer's expense. There are probably Medicaid dental offices near you. Either that, or find a School of Dentistry where you can have students work on you at very discounted rates.
Reply:Ouch! I'm sure you can work out a payment plan of some sort. Look for some clinics that go by your income.
Reply:If you don't mind inconvenience of long waiting periods and

driving across town, maybe you should go to a college.

There alternative plans that would cover more than your

insurance currently covers. Sign up for one of these. A good

selection below.

Alternative pain relief to injections during dental work?

Does anyone know of anywhere (I'll pay if I have to) where I can get an alternative such as gas to dental injections? I have a serious needle phobia and am completely unable to let anyone inject in my mouth. Up to now I have been lucky and have no fillings (i'm 26) but have had to have treatment for gingivitis without injection which is agony. The dentist originally refused to do it and couldn't believe I went through with it, but frankly I'd take a whole load of pain to invoid an injection. My concern is that if I need root canal work or deeper gingivitis treatment I won't be able to cope... Will anyone give me gas in the UK?

Alternative pain relief to injections during dental work?
you should ask your dentist about sedation rather than gas. You aren't knocked out you are still conscious but really relaxed and it also causes amnesia so you wont remember getting the treatment afterwards. You'll still need to have injections either way and root treatment would be extremely painfull without them as you are removing the nerve from the tooth. Personally I would rather get the injections as they aren't that bad, you could ask your dentist to put on a anaesthetic gel before the injections and you hardly feel them.
Reply:Glasgow Dental Hospital will do it in special circumstances
Reply:Just wanted to say, I am completely needle-phobic too and had to have a root canal filing last year (Harley St). I was given an anaesthetic injection but they put this gel/spray on my gum before so I actually didn't feel the injection at all. I also had my eyes closed the whole time so didn't see any horrible needle! So, if you can't find anywhere then ask if you can have this gel/spray thing put on first as it really really makes the whole thing bearable! Good luck!
Reply:What is GINGIVITIS? It sounds like the infection that ginger eople have in south park lol
Reply:i am terrified of dentists my teeth are all rotten anyway finally went to dentist she rubbed gel on my gums before injections i didnt feel a thing, honestly this has totally changed my fellings about going to the dentist.
Reply:In kids some dentists use gas, which is actually protossido of nitrogen. But in my opinion it is always better the injecton.Try to understand if it is about seeing the needle or the small pain you feel while they do that.In the first case it is all about working on yourself. In the second case you should understand that is just a second.Anyway dentists use a lidocaine spray (if you ask for it)on the gum before the injection,so you won't feel anything.

Question concerning work hours for dental hygienist?

I always wondered, when someone is working in the medical field like for example dental hygiene, and they work full-time (40 hours) In general do they get paid for the hourly lunches they take during the days in the week? do they get paid the full 40 hours or do they get paid 35hrs because 5 of those hrs are from the lunch breaks? any comments

Question concerning work hours for dental hygienist?
I pay per day, assuming there will be a lunch break. This gives the hygienist a 7 hour work day, so if she misses half a day or two hours or something, I have a basis for deducting pay for time missed. (Divide the daily amount by 7 to yield an hourly amount.)

~
Reply:well, how you get paid is up to the Doctor.but this is how most places work you go in at 8:00 -5:30 and that covers your lunch so you end up with a 8 hour day
Reply:I have only worked for dentist who do NOT pay for the lunch hour. 8:00 am - 5:00pm is 9 hours. You get paid for eight of the nine hours. If you get a lunch. If you don't then you get paid for 9 hours or 8 1/2 hours or what ever you worked. It is common for dental employees to not receive their entire lunch. and not receive any breaks during your day. Only receptionist are guaranteed an hour lunch each day. They can get up and leave. Hygienists, Dental Assistants and Dr's. have patients in the chairs they have to stay until the work is done. Remember this next time you see your dentist. Remember to thank them the next time they work through their lunch or stay late to finish the job.
Reply:In some offices, hygienists are paid a percentage of their production, not hourly. Many practices have 2 or more hygienists sharing a schedule, so each may work two or three days per week, depending on how many patients are being seen per week.

Where I work, the hygienists are paid per hour - they clock in when they arrive (we have a 20 min morning meeting for which they are paid), clock out for lunch, clock out at the end of their day.

In Dr. Sam's office, it works differently...almost like a salary.

As you can see, there are many variables invloved. A good hygienist is usually in high demand and can request the hours they want. Also, state and local labor laws may govern things like lunch breaks and overtime pay.

A good source for information in your local area: contact a college that offers dental hygiene certification and ask an instructor. They should be up to date on local rates, etc.

PS to krissyk: I work front office and if there is a patient being worked on, I NEVER "get up and leave". Patient in the chair means I am there, period.

I need a lot of dental work on my molars. I'm 24, have 2 kids, anemic with both resulting in little cavities

that got bigger. I've had a bad experience with dentists, but I found one I love who pulled out my wisdom teeth so I'm giving dentists a second shot. Now, would it be cheaper and wiser for me to get them pulled and to get a bridge for the last 2 teeth OR just settle for a root canal and caps. I need about 5 root canals. I haven't got dental work done because I really can't afford it. I just paid off my credit cards with my income tax refund. I efiled the first day it was available. How do I achieve the most for my money?????

I need a lot of dental work on my molars. I'm 24, have 2 kids, anemic with both resulting in little cavities
If it is your last two teeth than you will need an implant to hold the bridge in the back and that is surgery. Either option has its risks (root canals can fail and your body can reject implants) usually it is recommended that an implant is the best option because less things can go wrong with it later on (your natural tooth could get decay under the crown or abscess, etc, and still need to be extracted) but that should really be decided on a tooth by tooth basis. Have a consultation with your DDS and ask them if it was a family member what would they recommend? There are a lot of factors to consider but if you trust your DDS I would go with their opinion. Good luck restoring you oral health!
Reply:Discuss your concerns with your dentist. Explain your money problem too. A good dentist will advise you taking all factors into consideration. Root canals are painful and expensive, however bridge work is not cheap either. Personally given the choice, I would go with the bridge work. Have you considered implants?

Has anyone used Halcion for dental work?

I have an appointment tomorrow at the dentist and I must admit that I am scared to death. I have to have extensive dental work done and they are giving me Halcion to take one hour before my appointment. I was wondering if anyone has used this, how long it lasted and what else you can tell me about the experience with it. Also, if you have any other suggestions to help me with the fear (or pain!) please let me know. Thanks! From one giant chicken!!! HA HA

Has anyone used Halcion for dental work?
If you are a big chicken, you will LOVE the halcion!! We've prescribed it many of nervous patients and we only hear good things back from them. If you can, limit what you eat or drink after midnight. I don't know what time your appointment is tomorrow, but this will help the medication work great!! Please have someone drive you to %26amp; from the appointment!! I've found that it's better to take the medication about 90 minutes before the appointment rather than 1 hour. You'll be pretty much out of it all day so be prepared for that. I don't know what it feels like, but I've had patients say that they are just VERY tired and just want to sleep. You shouldn't remember too much about the day. Since you'll be so sleepy, you won't care what's happening to you. And remember to take your extra pills to the appointment with you. Good luck--you'll do great!
Reply:This is called oral conscious sedation. It does not put you to sleep, but just relaxes you. The dosage is determined by your weight, so the doctor will weigh you. Once the doctor sees that you are more relaxed he/she will start working on your teeth. The doctor will still be using local anaesthetic. When finished the doctor may keep you around for a while until he/she sees that you are less relaxed. The doctor will have instructions on how to carry out the remainder of the day.
Reply:Depending on your size, .25 mg of halcion should put you into a deep sleep where you wouldn't remember anything going on while the dentist works on you....but you CANNOT fight the effects of the drug or it won't work....now, does laughing gas not put you to sleep? Are you having major work done? I would imagine that novacaine should do the job....believe me, I just had gum surgery a few weeks ago. Good luck.

I am on disability which is extremely low but need dental work done and can not afford it.

I am disabled and need dental work desperately, can somebody help me please?
Check with the local health department or see if there are any dental colleges around they usually do work at a fraction of the cost.
Reply:I would check with your local health department. And possibly apply for some type of medicaid/medicare. Good Luck
Reply:Call your local United Way and they can steer you to a clinic that will give you the dental care that you need
Reply:Talk to your local Dentist and see if he will help you out or send you in the right direction. Check with the various agencies that aid the Diabled. You may be covered under Medicare or Medicaid. Check with the local Social Security Office and see if you are covered. Good Luck.
Reply:Since you are on disability, you of all people should qualify for dental care. I'm assuming that since you are on disability, you are also on Medicare A%26amp; B %26amp; Medicaid. If not, you should be, so you can get the needed dental attention you need. Pick up your phone %26amp; make some phone calls.
Reply:If there is a United Cerebral Palsy Association near you, they have dental services for the 'special needs' population.... or call your local department of Social Services... they can refer you to someone as well.

Edited to say that Medicare does not have dental benefits, unless a narrative from the primary MD is sent with a request for dental treatment due to a medical necessity....

Can I work for a dental office when I'm a medical assistant?

Okay, I graduated at some college for medical. I'm a certified medical assistant, is it possible that I can work at a dental office even though I used to work at a medical office?

Can I work for a dental office when I'm a medical assistant?
I suppose that the medical assistant training may allow you to transfer the skills that you learned in school such as handling insurance claims, phone etiquette and making appointments and other office skills into the dental office environment. For a dental assistant position, however, one may need the additional vo-tech training though I've heard that some dentists may provide on-the-job training. Wishing you the best of luck in your job search!

I am sure it differes from state to state and you didnt mention what state you are in.The medicaid office should give you a list of providers. If theres a certain one you want well call and ask the dental office Im sure his receptionsit will tell you.

I had a lot of dental work done this year. Can I deduct it from my taxes?

I alone spent a little over $14000 in 2007 on dental work and my husband spent about $7500. Can we use this as a tax deduction as we did not have any insurance and paid out of pocket?

I had a lot of dental work done this year. Can I deduct it from my taxes?
If you itemize, you list it as a medical expense. The first 7.5% of your AGI doesn't count.
Reply:Yes, you can deduct it as an itemized deduction (Form 1040, Schedule A). The deduction is the amount that exceeds 7.5% of your AGI (Adjusted Gross Income).

For example, if you and your husband's adjusted gross income is $100,000, then anything over $7,500 is deductible ($100,000 x 7.5%). So in your case, only $14,000 is deductible if your combined adjusted gross income is $100,000.
Reply:Maybe. The amount of total medical and dental expenses that's over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income is an eligible deduction - you only get benefit from it if you have enough deductions to itemize - your itemized deductions have to be more than the $10,700 standard deduction allowed on a joint return.

Try the dental school. They can help a lot and set up payment plans. Also many different dental offices have payment plans, many without interest. Apperently despite Bush's best efforts to stop offices from having payment plans.
Reply:if you are anywhere near memphis you can go to the ut memphis dental school. it's cheaper but it's gonna take forever to get all of your work done. you have to call the school on the first weekday of the month. the whole month's appointments fill up before 10am that first day so start calling early. the work you will get there is top notch and it's less than half price.

I need 20,000 of dental work, any ideas how I can pay for this?

I was told yesterday by a VitalDent office in NYC that I needed almost 20,000 worth of dental work in order to repair my mouth. I have no insurance and no family to help me. I'm in college and living off student loans and a bad part-time job. Maybe someone else has been in this sort of position before and can offer me some advice on a way out. Thanks !

I need 20,000 of dental work, any ideas how I can pay for this?
Dental work is not done for free in ANY of the 50+ dental schools in the U.S. NYU and Columbia both have dental schools (and possibly other universities too) in NY that will do work for you at a reduced rate. The young dentists who will be treating you are not "using you as a guinea pig" nor are they "experimenting" on you. They will carefully examine, diagnose, and treat your dental concerns only after many established dentists with many years of combined experience have also examined you and approved what must be done. The work that is done will be checked every step of the way by these experienced dentists to make sure that you are well taken care of. You pay with your time, however. Having work done in a dental school takes quite a bit longer than it would in private practice. I wish I had a quick and easy fix, but there is none. Best of luck to you.
Reply:Have you thought about getting false teeth? That should be a cheaper alternative and your teeth will look great. Only you and your dentist will know they are fake,
Reply:I have the same problem and i haven't found any answers in my town. But some times dentist colleges offer low rates for students to practice on you. Kind of scary but I don't have one of those in my town. The dentist always tell me to apply for a credit card but i have no credit. I am worried my only option is to let my teeth rot out. I hope you get some help.
Reply:If you need that much work you didn`t take care of your teeth to start with so I suggest you get them all pulled and get false teeth it will be a lot cheaper
Reply:I'm sure one of the universities in NYC have a dental school. Check with them. If you let them use you as a guinea pig for the dental students, you can probably get the work done for free.
Reply:Don't listen to railway's response. You didn't ask for a lecture on proper dental hygeine! It has nothing to do with whether or not you took care of your teeth. I have extremely soft enamel and can crack a tooth on anything--for example, i cracked mine eating a potato chip. If you don't have insurance, you are screwed when it comes to your teeth. I need about 6,000 worth done on mine right now so I totally understand.....I live in NC, and we have a dental school here. You send your name in and it is put in a monthly lottery. If your name is drawn, they send you info and you go in for an appointment and to make payment arrangements(sometimes it is completely free). Maybe they have in NY?
Reply:what did u do to your mouth, girl?
Reply:You should check with the NYU Dental school they do all sorts of work for almost nothing. But get the work done. Don't "Pull" your teeth. You sound young since your in College and it will take years off your life to have dentures too early. If you get your teeth removed when your young you have more time for your bone to loose density and then eventulay you won't even be able to wear dentures caues there is nothing left to hang onto... There are also financials plans that you can apply for to help with the cost. But do get it done even if it takes a while.

Also if I was you I would get a second or even 3rd opinion cause 20,000 dollars sounds like a lot even for NYC..But Good Luck
Reply:A lot of dental school with major universities offer discounted services- the work is done by the students but is supervised closely by the professor. My friend got his braces that way for a fraction of a price. Find out where the closest dental school near you is located. Also, you can take a loan (they offer 0% interested for 12 months sometimes) thru companies such as Care Credit (800) 333-1071- this is for medical and dental expenses only.
Reply:I feel so sorry for you. Unfortuantly there is not alot of help out there for dental. There are some pretty good programs to help but they are very far and few between. They are very hard to find and you have to live in certain areas to go to them. Look in your area for dental schools. They charge about half as much as a regular dentist does. From the sound of it, I am guessing that you need some crowns and root canals and maybe some bridges. What I would do is call around to diffrent dentist and see what they charge for a crown. The usual rate is $895. If you can find a dentist that charges a couple of hundred less, then I would go see him.Ignore that jerk that said that you should just get dentures since you don't take care of your teeth anyways. He don't know what he is talking about. Since you are having so much problems with your teeth, stay away from carbonated drinks because they can make them worse.
Reply:$20K is loads of money to pay for dental work. If you need implants then it may sum up to that. Why not travel abroad to Dental Care India Tour where top dentists cost much less, maybe in all inclusive just $5-6K you come back smiling in 2-3 weeks of stay.

Wearing a diaper for dental work?

I am going under to be put to sleep for dental work, and I read on a website that they recommend for slightly longer procedures that you wear depends incontinence briefs. I was wondering if anyone ever heard of this or is this makes sense. Do people lose bladder control when they go under or since they can't wake up to go to the bathroom. I guess i dont wanna wear a diaper but it would be worse to wet my pants in his chair.

if you are going under general, then they will but a cath in you
Reply:Well.. if they are putting you under general and don't have the means to put a cath it..then yes wear the dang diapers. Call the office and ask them their procedures.
Reply:so your being put to sleep huh.? usually people are only put to sleep to get the widsom tooth out.. but as I recall.. I dont think your gonna be asleep that long... your probably told not to eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to procedure, my guess is dont bother with the diaper bag, you will be just fine

Wearing a diaper for dental work?
Speaking as a Dental Assistant, I agree with the person that answered before me. Unless it is a VERY long procedure, you will completely fine. If you are nervous, make sure to completely empty your bladder before hand and avoid drinking alot before you go in. Even if an accident was to happen, most health professionals have seen a little bit of odd behavior happen in their presence and I assure you that no one will ever make fun of you or ever bring it up to you. I, personally had two root canals and 4 wisdom teeth extracted all at in the same visit while I was sedated and the worst that happened to me was that I drooled all over the place, but I assure you that in any dental practice this was a commonplace happening. Best of luck!
Reply:If you have never had a problem with incontinence before, you have NOTHING to worry about when you go for your dental work. You will not lose bladder control. Forget you ever read that article.
Reply:I have heard from a doctor that sometimes you do lose bladder control when under anesthesia. When you are in the O.R. the nurse takes care of the problem and you don't even know that it happened. That's why they have you remove your underpants before surgery.
Reply:If you're receiving general anesthesia, you will be required to be NPO (nothing by mouth) for at least 6-8 hours prior to the procedure.

This not only helps prevent the situation you mention, but prevents you from vomiting and aspirating the vomit (breathing it into your lungs) and therefore risking pneunomia.

I have been a healthcare teaching assistant for over 20 years and have never heard of this recommendation. If you normally have problems with incontinence, you may of course wear a diaper for your own peace of mind. The best source would be to ask your oral surgeon about this; he/she will probably laugh and say, "No, you don't need a diaper."
Reply:I once had a 2 hour operation that turned into a 15 hour one and asked about this, The anaesthetist told me that it was rare for anyone who had no problems to 'go' during an operation. And, apparently, I didn't.

Much to my unrelief.

Legal recourse on dentist who performed poor dental work?

I had some dental veneers done 2 years and 9 months ago in New York City. Recently, at least two dentists identified the work was performed below standard of care. It is so bad that I have to get them re-done. Otherwise, my teeth will decay and eventually die. The re-do will take $10,000! Although the dentist belongs to the New York State Dental Association, they do not accept complains for work done more than 2 years and 6 months ago.

Is there any other legal recourse I can pursue?

Legal recourse on dentist who performed poor dental work?
There is a limit to time that you have to take action in matters Like this. You could try to get a Atty- that Will shake them up But thats also Money But we also have freedom of free speach USE IT make sure you dont say anything that they didnt really do Like ( i went it and come out with a sex change) Also This is a Great Tool and site to use

I do feel your pain though (Only in the USA can you go to school and pass and Mess a person up for life and Become Rich for it) This matter like I said how far do you want to take this and If it gonna cost 10000.00 to fix them the atty- might cost twice as much. NOT WORTH IT but use that Site and The BBB good Luck. And dont worry oneday your smile will be great as the dentist falls out (we Hope)
Reply:in your case your time limit starts the minute you find out the work was shoddy via another dentist or other means. You still have a case. You will have to contact a lawyer about this. My office does affordable veneers.

Chewed up cheecks after dental work help!?

My daughter 4, had dental work done. She was numbed and she bit her cheeks up really bad. It has been 3 days and she still has chipmonk cheeks. She finally let me look inside her mouth and it is bad. What can i do to help it heal and take away the pain?? She wont let me touch her face.

Chewed up cheecks after dental work help!?
I would go back to the dentist or go see a doctor and you could try giving her Ora-gel or another mouth painkiller or a baby aspirin for the pain until you can get there. You just have to let her trust you, eventually she will give in so you can help her. Don't worry. :)
Reply:If you can explain to her how to do it, or ask her to do it - have her rinse with salt water. It will help heal the cheeks. If it is swollen, you can try to put some ice packs on her cheeks. But be sure and wrap them in a towel or something so it's not too cold. If it is really bad, the best thing to do is to call your dentist or doctor and ask them if they have any ideas or if they can see her. Good luck.
Reply:IT GOING TO BE HARD TO DO,BUT SOME ORAJEL OR AMESOL MAY BE PLACED USING A COTTON SWAB OVER THE AFFECTED AREA.

YOUR DAUGTER BIT HER CHEEKS/AND OR TONGUE AFTER HAVING ANESTHESIA. SHE WILL BENEFIT FROM SWISHING WITH SALT WATER TO HELP HEAL THE TRAUMATIZED TISSUES. 1/2 TEASPOON OF SALT DISSOLVED IN 8 ONCES OF WATER.

THE SWELLING OF HER CHEEKS WILL DECREASE WITH TIME.
Reply:I would highly recommend a call to the dentist....if you can make a game out of it ...try to have her gargle with salt water. This will help pull some of the bacteria out of the "wounds". You want her to do the salt water gig about every 1/2 hour.

Also it might be a good idea for her to have some Tylenol or Motrin (children's of course) for the next 24 hours...you know to help the swelling go down.

Does she like popsicles ...get her some..this time try to stay away from 100 % juice pops simply because the fruit may have natural acids in them that may cause stinging in her mouth!!! Mouth injuries usually heal really fast!!

Definitely double check with the dentist!!!

I hope your little one feels better soon!!

I would stay away from ora gel simply because being numb caused this mess in the first place
Reply:i dont know about the healing , warm salt water maybe as a gargle but at her age would she know to wash her mouth out and not swallow that, call the doctor i would say. poor kid.
Reply:She probably needs some antibiotics as she has infected herself with her own saliva. Sorry to say... Get in touch with your dentist. He/she may even call in a prescription without seeing her.

Does anyone on here work in the dental field?

i would like to meet someone who works in the dental field just to see wat it is like to work in the dental field. if u do u can email me.

Does anyone on here work in the dental field?
You are welcome to email me, but if you are interested ask your dentist to spend time at the office observing for an afternoon. You could get a chance to talk to the staff and ask pertinant questions. You could talk to the director of your local college's dental hygiene program for more information or even be a student at their clinic were the hygienist's train. Ask yourself if you like working with the public, some people just don't like to and would rather be behind a computer screen. I have been a dental hygienist for 15 years (next month) and love what I do!

Good luck!

6 year old needs dental work. Have some questions...?

My 6 year old daughter needs some dental work. She went for a check up today and she needs to have a tooth extracted and one tooth needs a filling. They said when she has the work done they will give her a mild sedative - I think it's like a juice she drinks. She will not be asleep - more "out of it". And they will restrain her with a "papoose board". I will not be allowed in the room with her. Has anyone experienced this before? I am terrified for her!! Do any dentists put 6 year olds to sleep or is it too dangerous?

6 year old needs dental work. Have some questions...?
Dentist have training in sedation, so I wouldn't worry about that. The papoose is for hids so they don't flail around during the procedure. It makes the procedure safer for her.

The reason that parents are not allowed in the room is because statistically, children have been found to behave better if their parents are not present. Having mom there does nothing to calm her nerves.

The worst thing that you can do for your child in this matter is to act terrified for her or tell her how much you don't like dental work. Much of a child's anxiety as it pertains to dental appointments has to do with the horror stories they hear from other people.
Reply:Ok go get a second consultation. You should be allowed in the room and i never heard of that much it seems a bit extreme go get a second opinion
Reply:I would never allow them to conduct any dentistry without me in the room with my child. Major surgery is one thing, but this is something else.

I would seek a second opinion right away.
Reply:Too bad you didn't start her dental care earlier before it reached the point of needing an extraction. A three year old is ready to start seeing the dentist for evaluation and cleaning. Whatever they give her has no doubt been proven to be effective and she will no doubt remember little of what is going on. A papoose board is a short board with wide flaps with velcro closures. The child lies on the board with the arms down and the flaps are fastened over the child's chest and hips. This pretty much makes the child immobile. They are often used in emergency rooms. At this point you both need to get this behind you but I hope you will keep up with her dental care to avoid future episodes like this. Keeping you out of the room is for your benefit since she won't know what is going on anyway and you will no doubt have a hard time coping. Good luck.
Reply:hunni, i would defintely get a 2nd opinion on that one, my daughter is 5, and we were allowed in the room with her during any procedures she has had. I would be a little suspicious about not being allowed in with her.....

Thank you for your wonderful comments by the way..(smile)_
Reply:you may want second opinion...my dentist said no point fillig or fixing baby teeth..waste of money...if it is a permanent tooth get it fixed..teach her to brush and floss ..2x daily..to keep adult teeth healthy..mouth washes help.
Reply:For someone that has a 6 year old child, you should really try refraining yourself in calling someone an idiot unwarranted. Honestly, when I made my last comment, I did not read what the other girl (killer chick) wrote. I know she replied to one of your questions that was a week old. But after I read it, she did answer your question without any mean intentions. And you just called her an "idiot". That was uncalled for. She didn't deserve to be called that.

I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Goodluck with the dentist.

Maybe you could call the dental office and ask for their suggestion. When I had my 3rd molars extracted I didn't wet my pants, not sure how long the procedure was though.

However, what's the big deal if you do???

If it gives you peace of mind, go for it.

Reply:I have never heard of this but then again i have never had major dental work. If you are asleep during the operation then your body should make a hormone to cut down on the amount of urine you make like what happens at night; so having to go shouldn't be a problem unless you are a bedwetter. I think the idea behind the diaper is that the operation may affect some nerves and your brain might be confused and accidently send a signal to wet yourself.

I would wear the diaper because if the website recommended it then it will be for a reason and they probably know best.

Anyway depends are not a baby's diaper like pampers - they are very discreet, don’t bulge and don’t make a crinkly noise when you walk. They might make you feel a bit like a baby wearing a diaper but it is only for a couple of hours.

And like you I would rather be wearing a wet diaper than be embarrassed at having peed over the dentist's chair!

What philanthropic groups offer emergency funds for dental work to the disabled poor?

Individual on Social Security disability, age 49, needs extensive dental work without adequate funds. Dentists in region will not accept payment plans for the amount of work needed. Individual now has chest pains which may be originating from needed severe dental work. Person is not on Medicaid, only receives Medicare which does not cover this work. Other medical problems evident in individual.

Contact your state dental association, listed in the yellow pages under "American Dental Association." In my state anyway, there is a charity care organization that is accessed through the state association. The patient you describe is exactly who this activity is designed to help.

If you add the state to your question, you might get a more exact response.
Reply:My sister in law went to a dental school. It was really cheap (around$10). She went a couple of times and eventually was someone's final project (Free dental work). That's how much work she needed. I think her out of pocket for roughly 30 cavities was $20.

I need free dental work?!?

Are there any dentists on here I can sleep with for free dental work?! I know it sounds desperate, but I need it bad!

I need free dental work?!?
NOTHING IS "FREE" EXCEPT AIR AND SUNSHINE.
Reply:i know of none available
Reply:check out your county health department. they will usually only pull teeth or do fillings for adults. either free or income-based (sliding fee scale) they wont do root canals or anything like that.

If you look up a college that has a class for beginners,. some times they need people to work on, call your local University oe college, if they don't have it they will know who does!!
Reply:try your city's university. sometimes the dental department needs people for students to work on. and its okay, they don't mess up.

if you live anywhere near philadelphia, University Of Pennsylvania does a nice job.

my dad got a nice pair of dentures there. xD
Reply:Surely the dental surgery will let you pay the bill off over a set amount of time? Most places will or what about going to social welfare and trying to get some sort of financial help? I would shop around and see if someone will let you pay it off at least if you deposit money with your first appointment they can see you are willing to continue as having teeth problems is not the nicest - I know I've had plenty but welfare helped me out and I just paid them back. Hope you get some luck.
Reply:Have you tried looking for a Dental School in your area? They do procedures for a lot less money.

You can also look into a medical flexible spending account through your work. You tell them the amount you will spend for medical or dental costs over the year then it's available to you now, and they take it out of your pay before taxes over the year (Like mine is $1000 per year, but only about $80 is taken out of my check per month).

Hope this helps!
Reply:I have a wonderful dental discount plan. The savings are up to 80%. THey are nationwide and the cost is only $11.95 per month . THe name of hte company is ameriplan. Here is the website link

Reply:ok --take this or leave it---but i feel a root canal is a waste of 700$ and that is with insurance--1 year later the tooth turns black anyway and you have to keep replacing it---but yes you can start giving your dentist money now and when its all there then you can get it fixed --but if its a back tooth get it pulled for 75$ no one sees it--

or you can go to any credit union open it up for 5$ and get the loan through them--you pay them back 50$ a pay--

Trying for baby - dental work?

My partner and I are trying for a baby. I need some dental work doing. My fertile days are Thursday - tuesday. I have an appointment on Monday (mid "trying" period) for drilling out an old filing and root canal, then subsequent months for finalising the work.

Will this be OK if I get pregnant?? Ofcourse I might not get pregnant....but if I am I dont want to harm the baby......

Am I worrying unnecessarily?

Trying for baby - dental work?
Yes, you are!! But, it's okay-better to be safe, your concern for your baby-to-be is too adorable!

As best I recall, dental work is okay during the first and second trimesters, but not the third-lying on the back for an extended period of time tends to hinder progress. You should be okay with the work that you have to do, when you get pregnant (cause I'm hopeful that you will) you will be at a point in your pregnancy that is fine for that. Go ahead with the work, if you have any questions, your dentist is the one with whom you should speak.
Reply:yes its fine. but my ob always told me no epinephrine when pregnant.
Reply:Novocaine is safe when pregnant - just don't have xrays or gas, according to my doctor. I'm paranoid so I asked the nurse and practitioner's opinion, and they all said the same thing.
Reply:Actually, I heard dental work is most dangerous in the first trimester, "best" in the second trimester, and tricky in the third trimester because of the chair. I had an appt. very early on, before I even knew I was pregnant, but thought I might be, so I canceled just in case, and I'm glad I did. My dentist told me novacaine was out, but that septocaine (sp?) was fine. I asked my doctor and he had never heard of it, so I decided to save all my dental appts for after the baby's born (except for simple cleanings).

If I'm pre-dent in undergrad school, can I work as a dental hygenist while I'm getting thru dental school?

I'm going to get a degree in biochem, and I will take the DATs and get into dental school....while I'm in dental school, can I work as a dental hygenist? Also, do some employers offer to pay the costs of dental school if I offer to work for them in exchange?

If I'm pre-dent in undergrad school, can I work as a dental hygenist while I'm getting thru dental school?
My daughter became a hygenist. She wanted to do the same thing.

Problem... Dental offices and class hours are the same!
Reply:it all depends on what office hires you. some offices will hire under school conditions, and some won't. get you resume out there and see what happens, good luck to you, also, will the school help place you, or do you have an internship somewhere that will hire you?
Reply:YOU CAN ONLY DO LEGAL DENTAL HYGIENE IF YOU ARE A LICENSED DENTIST OR HYGIENIST.

WHILE IN SCHOOL YOU CAN PRACTICE LEARNING TO DO HYGIENE, BUT YOU WON'T BE PAID FOR THIS.

YOU CANNOT FIND A WAY TO BARTER FOR YOUR COST IN LEARNING TO BE A DENTIST.
Reply:You can work as a dental assistant, but not as a hygienist AFAIK in any state without successfully completing a dental hygiene training program and getting a license.

If you're a chairside assistant, you may learn more about the nuts and bolts of dental practice than you will as a hygienist anyhow. But the pay isn't as good as a hygienist's.

No money for dental work?

i do not have a dental school that takes the public

i do not qualify for medicad and i do not make enough for $20, of work

No money for dental work?
Check for a dental charity in your area
Reply:Well, if it's an emergency, almost any hospital MUST take you and fix it. You can then pay them later. Alternitavely, sometimes there are clinics that work on a sliding scale w/ payment arrangements that might work for you. Best of luck!
Reply:$20K??? Not to be rude, but if you need that much work, may I suggest going to an Affordable Denture type place? Unless, you have severe infection...then get the infection taken care of first and then get em yanked...

My ex bro in law had a similar issue. He had his pulled and new set of decent dentures for $3,500.
Reply:if you are in southern california there is a place called the DON SCHRODER clinic. it is a brand new building in Riverside, in Rubidoux. They have a program called ability to pay. If you bring a letter of support saying you are broke (from whoever you live with), They will do good dental work for a 30.00 copay. I just went last Monday and got two fillings in my front teeth, xrays and he did a good job, all for 30.00 bucks.
Reply:20,000.00 no way.Where did you get that amount from? In N.Y. (Albany) they have this health center that goes on a sliding fee scale that means you pay according to your income on what you can afford so try a heath center in your area.
Reply:Check around your local colleges to see if you can be a volunteer to get your work done. Here in Illinois, ICC has people volunteer that need dental work to better train the dental techs, and soon to be dentist. Usually they will do any and all work for free since you volunteered. It may be a shot in the dark, but it's worth a try.
Reply:There are some programs that may loan you the money for this. One is called Care Credit: http://www.carecredit.com/ - I did not qualify for this.

Another option is to see your dentist and ask to have the most important issues taken care of first, and one at a time. If you have insurance, it should cover some or most of the costs, but you will have to get the work done over a period of time.

If all else fails you can go to Mexico and have it done for real cheap: http://mexicolesstraveled.com/dentists.h...

Good luck and good health.

No money for dental work what are alternatives?

i dont have 20g's + for dental work, would dentures be another soultions or do they just look stupid? How much do those run?

any suggestions would help, thanks!

No money for dental work what are alternatives?
Go to a dental clinic. Dentures are horrible and should be a last resort.
Reply:umm if you're poor enough you could apply for medicaid at social services. They take care of most dental work. especially if your teeth is rotted out, but not anything cosmetic like braces or stuff like that. Dentures are waaaay expensive. I don't know how expensive..but it is

My teeth need dental work done and I have gaps from previous extractions that I would like filled.?

My Dentist will only do fillings and has said that any other work ie Bridge, Implants, Dentures would have to be paid for. I am exempt from paying for Dental treatment so how does this work?

My teeth need dental work done and I have gaps from previous extractions that I would like filled.?
only essential work is covered by your exemption certificate
Reply:I'm in the same boat as ya bud, have to pay each time, but if you get benefits of some kind may be entitled to some refund?.....
Reply:Why are you exempt? He probably expects payment for these procedures because they are more costly than your routine exam/fillings.
Reply:some work is not covered by exemption
Reply:im the same,, anything other than fillings crowns ets is seen as cosmetic and is only done privately,, i wanted to get braces and have to pay 3000.
Reply:Have you any idea how much an implant or bridge costs?

I have just paid £280 for a white crown at the back of my mouth, I could have had a free silver one, but it would have been obvious, so I paid private.

An implant or a bridge would cost thousands, and you probably would not qualify for dentures.

Your going to have to save up and pay, as the treatment you want may be considered cosmetic.

There is only a certain amount of money in the pot, I'm afraid and unless you have met the criteria for free cosmetic treatment your going to have to go private.

Some people travel to other countries for dental treatment as its cheaper, if that option appeals.
Reply:I would challenge the dentist on this ask for a list of charges i am having a bridge put in soon and i won t have to pay for it

I have a tax credit certificate i don t have to pay for it as its not cosmetic and affects me eating
Reply:Any "cosmetic" dentistry must be done privately, and it is mega-money!!
Reply:Like many things in life nowadays, money grabbing and money talks!

Perhaps Dan would care to expand on how and why won't he have to pay for it.
Reply:I'm in the same boat.. I have 3 spaces that need filling, when i asked if they could bridge the gaps they just said no becuase i don't pay for any of my dental work.. I really need it done and it has affected my whole mouth as i can't chew properly anymore and now i have a really bad cracking jaw that hurts everytime i eat as a result.
Reply:Even if you have insurance, a crown is in the region of £80-100, and an implant will cost around £3,000. The insurance only pays for lab work.

I think you may be able to have dentures with your exemption certificate if you can show that it is affecting your health - i.e. you cannot chew your food.

Try asking Citizen's Advice or your local M.P. (surprising how high people can jump when they receive a letter from The Houses of Parliament!)
Reply:Exenpt patients are entitled to free dentures and bridges. However often it goes over the price level that requires the dentist to apply to the NHS for prior approval before they can start work so some dentists don't want to fill out this paper work-especially if they feel you sill have a high decay rate and it would be made worse by putting a denture or bridge in your mouth. You are not entitles to free implants.
Reply:unfortunatelly any additional work has to come out of your pocket and it is very expensive

I came across to this site, check it out, hope it helps

for the same price of a treatment you get the benefit of a vacation to recover after dental work

I'm having dental work done soon (4 oral surgeries). I'm scared stiff! Will I be put to sleep for this??

I am getting 4 teeth pulled and an exposed root tip taken out. Then I'm getting a full top plate inserted... this is a lot for me because I'm so SCARED OF DENTISTS. I am 52 and I know that this is probably nothing to worry about --but still I have much anxiety about dentists because of an experience I had when I was younger. This just resurfaces for me when I need to go for dental work. Any suggestions? Can I ask to be sedated or knocked out with that gas they use now? By the way I am on Mass. Health. Will that make a difference in my treatment?

I'm having dental work done soon (4 oral surgeries). I'm scared stiff! Will I be put to sleep for this??
ask for nitrous hon. I am just as afraid as you are if not more and I get nitrous everytime i have teeth pulled or anything like that. I would love to have it just for fillings too and even cleaning, but i cant afford it! lol! The gas makes it so much better. You don't even care that they are gonna do anything to you. You are awake, but you don't care. If you ask they will deliver. You should call now though so they know you want it and find out what it costs. My dentist charges me $30 for it. Good Luck hon! You will be fine.
Reply:You haven't asked your doc yet, I think they should keep you awake!
Reply:Most likely you will be knocked out with gas, so bring a friend to drive you home.

If no gas, ask for gas. Dentistry has changed a lot lately and most are way more sympathetic to pain.
Reply:they will knock you out im sure
Reply:If you are being worked on by a maxillofacial surgeon, then chances are you will receive a general anaesthetic which, whilst uncomfortable is so much better than the alternative. If you do undergo a general, you will probably receive a local just before you regain consciousness
Reply:Maybe not totally under, the Dr. may use nitrous oxide, and sometimes it´s useful if you take a pill to calm your nerves prior to the procedure. The procedure seems like a lot ,you could take pain killers/antinflamatories and antibiotics before hand. But most of all, it all depends on you, you must trry and remain calm.

I need extensive dental work on two teeth, like both are broke in half and starting to feel nerve,?
You need a plan with no waiting periods so things don't get

worse, and a plan with no limits because you have extensive

work to be done. My first choice is eHealthPlus and if that

doesn't work for you, one of the Dental Plans.com.
Reply:Hi Im a dentist and might be able to help you with the treatment. Please email me at robtindale2005@yahoo.com.au

I need to have some extensive dental work done and I'm looking to go to Mexico for a cheaper price.?

There is a place called Rio Dental just acrossed the border from El Paso, and I can stay with a friend there. How can I check the reputation of their work? How can I trust it. There is a 14,000 dollar difference in the price from here to there. Would you trust going to mexico for dental work?

I need to have some extensive dental work done and I'm looking to go to Mexico for a cheaper price.?
I grew up near the border in NM and a lot of kids in my school had dental work done in Mexico. I never went so can't say for certain but I can think of at least five classmates who had Mexican braces. They went somewhere in Juarez. I don't live in the region anymore so can't tell you any particular place. Maybe Rio Dental can give you some of their past clientele as reference?
Reply:Look, I can't give you advice...but I can tell you that in Nov. 05 I had surgery done on my stomach and now it is all messed up and I have to have someone go in and fix it. I saved like $5,000.00 by going across the border...stupid move.
Reply:Ask other people who went there.
Reply:Why would you be willing to risk your life in what has been proven to be risky medical procedures, south of the border? It is not worth it and you would have no recourse if something went wrong!
Reply:Many of the doctors and dentists have also or also work in the states. The only difference is they can't charge an arm and a leg because the majority of the people could not afford it.If the US has an economical crisis tomorrow,Saterday dentists would practically give there services away in order to survive.Prices adjust to the cost of living.Good luck
Reply:How about you shut up who the **** wouldnt trust mexico its the same god damn thing *****..u ******* racist..and ur cheap

Cheap or free dental work nyc?

i have one of those jobs that provides no benefits but is a necessary evil in the long run. So i'm financially limited in seeking health care but make more than the minimal for free health insurance by the city. Does anyone know of any dentists that do really cheap work (wisdom tooth removal) that you or someone you know has used. Even those dental schools want $450 for each tooth which considering all four need removal is a bit pricey for me. Any help is appreciated.

Cheap or free dental work nyc?
Some of the best places to go are community colleges or dental universities in your area. There are also some dentists who do work for little or no fee.

The community colleges have hygienists who clean, x-ray, and do minor work, whatever is allowed by law in your state.

Universities have interns who are honing their skills. They usually do a great job.
Reply:I'm not in the NY area, but where I'm from there are companies who provide dental services, such as wisdom teeth removal, and compensate the patient financially in exchange for input on the effectiveness of pain medication after the procedure. Not sure if this is available in your area, but may be something to look into. Good luck to you!
