Non-Narcotic Pain Medications and My Dental Work?

I have to undergo some fairly major dental work in the next 2 weeks and I am so concerned about pain relief. I'm an ex-narcotic addict. Are there any medications that my Dentist can prescribe that would help me if I absolutely have to have something stronger than Tylenol or ibuprofen? This is just a big concern for me. I was honest with her and told her of my past problems with Vicodin. She was appreciative that I told her. I know we should trust our healthcare professionals and I do, but I am not sure that she has encountered this situation before. She didn't act like she had.

THE ANSWER IS MOTRIN 800mg TABLETS EVERY 4-6 HOURS AS NEEDED FOR PAIN.


THE SAME EFFECT CAN BE OBTAINED BY TAKING 4 (FOUR) 200mg IBUPROFEN (ADVIL) TABS. THIS IS AN NSAID OR NON-NARCOTIC NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PAIN MEDICINE FOUND TO BE BETTER THAN CODEINE FOR PAIN RELIEF.
Reply:There are some non-narcotic pain relievers that do work fairly well such as ultram. Be careful- just because they aren't "phyically addictive" doesn't ,mean they can't be habit forming.
Reply:There are other alternatives to pain medication besides narcotics. You definately are not the only person that has ever had a problem with narcotic addiction. It literally happens all of the time. If this is the first time she's heard a patient tell her that, it's rather her first day on the job or past patients have not been open about their problem. If you would like to find out your options try researching: Non-Opiod Analgesics or NSAIDS.(Both are non-narcotic pain medications)

While Ultram is non-narcotic, it is not recommended for patients that have ever had an addiction to alcohol or narcotics. Do not use Ultram (tramadol) if you have ever been addicted to narcotics, it's far too similar and you will be in trouble. There is current legislation to add tramadol to the controlled substances list, even though it is not a narcotic.

About that look she gave you: I have known dentists to refuse novicaine-type injections to those patients that have had previous alcohol or drug problems. So if I were you, I would be sure she intends to numb you prior to your procedure. She might not want to use anything for numbing which is barbaric practice, so be sure to ask. They have topical numbing agents and injectables so I always request both.





I'm sure it's going to be hard, but your best bet is to alternate advil and tylenol, hon. Take enough time off of work to lay around and sleep through it. And please do not ask for or take ultram unless you want to be back at square one with your addiction.
