Do any of you take an antibiotic for dental work?

Do you think it is really necessary if you have a murmur? I don't think I want to take them anymore. I have to take them every time I have dental work done.

Does your doctor get upset with you if you a non-compliant?

Do any of you take an antibiotic for dental work?
daisymae,

I would discuss it with your cardiologist or family doctor, and ask them to write a letter to your dentist if the physicians do not think you meet the new guidelines for antibiotics. Several things can cause a heart murmur, and taking antibiotics ahead of dental procedures is still recommended for some conditions. However, many people who used to be instructed to take antibiotics prior to dental procedures are no longer instructed to do so.

Most patients don't need antibiotics before dental procedures to prevent infective endocarditis

Reply:Thanks daisymae!

My daughter's cardiologist says she does not need to take the antibiotics, her family doctor and dentist prefer that she continues to do so prior to dental work. Perhaps it will just take time for everyone to review the new studies. Report It

Reply:I have to do the same thing. I don't like taking any kind of medicine but the dentist convinced me that it's for my protection. Supposedly something can go terribly wrong if you don't so, I wouldn't take any chances.
Reply:I went to my Dentist two months ago. I was told the dental society states with my condition, a leaking vale, I not longer need the antibiotics prior to dental work.
Reply:PLEASE TAKE THEM. THE MOUTH IS FILLED WITH A LOT OF BACTERIA AND WHEN VISITING THE DENTIST IF ANY BLOOD IS PRESENT THROUGH HIS WORK IT WILL GET BACTERIA INTO YOU BLOOD STREAM THIS CAN CAUSE A SEVERE INFECTION IN YOUR HEART.
Reply:Daisy please take them. Our friends with knee replacements are most likely on coumadin and it is extremely important.

You're too valuable to us for you to be taking chances with your health.
Reply:I am supposed to notify the dentist prior to an appt that I am diabetic...and what meds I'm on in case I need an antibiotic.
Reply:I would do what you feel most comfortable with doing!
Reply:Due to having rheumatic fever as a child, I am supposed to take them prior to dental work because of possible infection risks to the heart. However, most antibiotics make me sick. If anyone knows of medication without this problem I would like to know which one I could use.
Reply:Yes, I have a murmur and mitral valve. if I forgot to take the antibiotics, the dentist would not work on me. So, he finally agreed to let me sign off on them saying I would not hold him responsible. My family doctor wasn't happy.
Reply:My mom has to take them because she's had 2 knees and a hip replaced and they are afraid of the risk of infection. She also has a heart murmur. Please talk to your doctor and dentist about this and how you feel. Don't take any chances with your health, you are so dear to us.
