Ileagel dental work????
Try using periods. And no, it's not illegal to work on teeth in young patients, there is a whole specialty devoted to it. Retainers or mouth appliances are used all the time in patients of that age.
Reply:I have seen 7 and 8 year olds with braces

Australian dental work - advice needed?

Hi all.

I have a fair bit of work that I need done on my teeth, I just wanted to see if anyone here would have a price idea, I need to have two teeth removed from the back of my mouth, one on the top the other on the opposite bottom. Both have been almost smashed to the gums. Also half my front tooth was broken off, all of this happened in a fight anyway. I'm in no pain but would like to take care of it all. Mainly the broken front tooth, I'm wondering what would be the procedure to repair half a tooth and perhaps the approximate cost. The back ones will just get ripped out I suppose. Also I could probably do with getting some of the tobacco and coffee stains off my teeth that are starting to form, so it looks like up could be up for a few thousand bucks?

Thanks.

Where can I find free or very cheap dental work to fix a root canal that has broken?

I had the root canal when I was a teenager and now 20 some years later the tooth has broken and another is loose. I don't have dental insurance and don't make much money. I've checked around and there isn't even a clinic that I could go to in the county that I live in. Does anyone have any ideas? I need help... this is starting to affect my self esteem. I live in Northeast Ohio.

Where can I find free or very cheap dental work to fix a root canal that has broken?
Look for the closest dental school. They usually have programs where dental students provide care either free of charge or at very low rates. The students are supervised by licensed dentists.
Reply:i guess this is only if you live in airdrie but go to apple wellness center! :D
Reply:You can check the classifieds online, I see dental students that are looking for patients some times. But the quickest way qould be to get a LOW cost discount dental plan with no waiting period and good discounts. Email me if you cannot find one. They should be available in that area.

Do i have to pay for my bf dental work?? i mean he only pays for 1/2 the rent, and 1/2 of the internet?

i have to pay for: food, pg%26amp;E, formula, diapers, baby stuff, gas, babysitter. and on top of that i have to deal with his bad attitude. he doesnt want to be bother at all. he cant watch the baby for 5 mins, because he goes nuts, he cant even take the trash out,not even sex, because of his game.f*ck!! i tried to tell him that i need help he says he cant, doenst make alot, but he complains alot, he doesnt like food blah blah, yet he always want to have bbqs, which i have to pay for, buy presents for his family. i told him to get a part time job so he get what he wants %26amp; help me out alittle and he says " i cant im too tired" when he only drives around. i already told him im not responsible for any of sh*t anymore, hes 5 yrs older than and should be taking care of his daughter!!! am i wrong for not paying for his dental??

Do i have to pay for my bf dental work?? i mean he only pays for 1/2 the rent, and 1/2 of the internet?
My suggestion...tell him he has X months (be realistic...it may take a while to find employment depending on your locale). Tell him he has to come up with X dollars per month, or hand over X % of his paychecks ASAP.

Tell him if he doesn't do that, then you're walking. Don't say it as a threat, but as something that will be forced onto you. You can't do everything yourself. If he really wanted to be there, he would be doing all those things and more.....and you know it.

I hate ultimatiums, but you have a child....your responsibility is to him/her. Make sure the father figure is responsible, contributing, and that they see a healthy relationship!

sorry, I know this is a bit harsh...but hope it helps.
Reply:sorry to say but its you're fault for letting him get away with that crap you picked a loser...move on
Reply:I would let his teeth fall out and kick him to the curb, you got yourself a lazy a.s.s. who doesn't want responsibility so you need to be strong and say bye to him and find yourself a better man.
Reply:you have a bad husband. you should get divorced
Reply:You sold yourself out, didn't you? Living with a man, paying his way, sleeping with him, having babies with a loser. You're wrong about a lot of things, paying his dental work included
Reply:honey your crazy if you stay with him believe me it will get worsse
Reply:Only thing you should be paying for is a locksmith to kick him out, or a moving van to move yourself out. You are being taken advantage of, it shouldn't be tolerated.
Reply:Sounds to me like you would be better off on your own. Through out the bum and before you ever get pregnant again, make sure you have a real partner who shares in responsibilities and marries you first.
Reply:No you are not wrong. It's his bills not yours. The longer you let him get away with it, the longer he will act this way. He is very selfish and not willing to help at all. I would give him an ultimatum that he either shares the work load, the bills and the care of the baby, or hit the road. It will be cheaper for you if hes' gone.
Reply:Yes...dont pay for that!! This guy sounds like a lazy no good leech! You need to do something that will light fire under his a** and get him to step up a little.
Reply:Holy Moly, how can you put up with someone like that.

Move out and get you a real Man.
Reply:Absolutely not! You shouldn't have to support him if he can't even help with his daughter! Tell him to either start contributing or find someone else to support him.
Reply:Well, I am bias and not in 'like or love' with him::: I THINK YOU COULD DO BETTER BY YOURSELF! ACCORDING TO YOU, WHAT ''DO'' YOU NEED HIM FOR?

IT is not wise to stay with a man ''just because he is daddy'', when he is not even playing THAT ROLE EITHER!

You are YOUNG and not bad looking, so why not free yourself for a grown man who would accept you and your child. Some good men also like to cook! IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES OF BEING HAPPY...CAUSE IF YOU KEEP RIDING THIS SAME OLD HORSE, YOU ARE ONLY GOING TO GET KICKED!

ONLY YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU AND THE KIDS HAPPINESS.....GOOD LUCK.
Reply:Your the one letting me do this to you. You need to stand up to your standers and quit letting him wal all over you. Tell him pay the bills to or HE"S out. Hun don't pay for his dental work
Reply:You my dear, are being taken advantage of by your b/f. I can guarantee you that he will stay with you and make your life miserable as long as YOU ALLOW HIM TO! Tell him to go mooch off of someone else. IF he can't help at least with the babysitting, food, utilities half way, then he is taking advantage of you! He also sounds like he is depressed, and needs to get some counseling, but I bet he won't admit he needs help. Hon, in my 60 yrs. I have found you can't help someone that isn't ready to accept help. Is all you are doing now, is raising him too, along with your kids. He needs to GO! AND YOU ABSOLUTELY ARE NOT WRONG IN NOT WANTING TO PAY FOR HIS DENTAL WORK!!!!!!!!!Also if you are keeping him around just because of the baby, you are doing that baby of his no favors!!!!!! That baby is going to grow up either just like him, or hating him and YOU for not getting rid of him in the first place!
Reply:Sounds like you have a free loader on your hands. Kick him out!!

What are some ways to save money on dental work?

I've heard of dental tourism.

is there anything that can be done to save money closer to home?

What are some ways to save money on dental work?
X2 on the above suggestions on finding a dental school if there is one near you. Dental schools are excellent for getting great dental care at an affordable price.

How do I know? I graduated from one. :-D
Reply:don't spend alot of money %26gt;.%26gt;
Reply:If you have a dental school near you. YOu can get work done for little cost by students under total supervision of the license dentists professors. It takes longer then if you where to have it done a dental practice but it's worth the saving money..Good LUck
Reply:Find a dental college in your area. They take patients on for their students to practice and learn from. The procedures are cheaper but your visit to the dentist chair can be longer as your dental work must be supervised and graded. I've heard of lots of people doing this.
Reply:say "SO LONG DENNAL PLAN!"
Reply:You can try a dental school or a discount dental plan. I have used both and have saved money. I use a plan that costs $11.95 a month and all procedures and specialist are included for the discounted cost. If you want, you can research and see if there are providers within your area http://www.MyBenefitsPlus.com/40496082 . Hope this helps, I understand where you are coming from.

I am going under ga to have some dental work done how do they knock you out and how do they?

i am scared of the dentist he told me i should go under for alot of dental i dont know how they knock you out or what it is like when you are being knocked

I am going under ga to have some dental work done how do they knock you out and how do they?
When I had my dental surgery they started an IV and gave me meds thru it that knocked me out extremely quickly. It was the best I've ever slept!
Reply:Either an injection on the back of the hand or gas through a mask
Reply:hi, they will give you an injection and you will just fall asleep, dont worry its not scary and it doesnt hurt or anything like that. I have a phobia of needles so i was given gas before the injection so i wouldn't know about having the injection. being gassed is kinda fun actually, you breath in this plastic smelling stuff and then the room starts spinning- but its kinda funny and not scary at all. So dont worry you will be fine x
Reply:Its nothing to worry about, you will be knocked out by the doctor who will put a needle into the back of your hand then inject you with the anasthetic you may feel a cold sensation in your hand for a second then you will be asleep.

Its better to be asleep with lots of dental work being done you will feel a bit sore and disorientated when you wake but i recently took my 5 yr old daughter to have a tooth removed under g/a she was fine and i'm sure you will be too x
Reply:hi there i got and injection on the back of my hand it wasnt sore anout 5 or 10 sec later i was sleeping and can't remember a thing it is a good sleep don't worry am scared of hospitals and things it's not that bad

good luck and take care x
Reply:I was injected.

They told me i will be concious though out, that way you open wider, bite this, rinse etc when asked.

Here is the odd bit. You wil not remember a thing, not a thing, so if it hurt you dont know, but like i said its so you co operate with the dentist.

When mine was finished they asked me to walk to the recovery room and sit down, aparently I did. (but i dont remember)

You should also take some one with you to take you home, when you go home you will sleep and sleep, i slept solid for 22 hours.

I would like to go again just for the injection.(you don't feel high or anything just normal but you really will sleep well)

dont worry.
Reply:I had to face my dental fears 3 weeks ago as I badly needed work done. I had IV sedation, basically I was awake, fully aware of what was going on but not a care in the world about what was happening to me. I felt like it was ten minutes of my time and when I was brought back round was amazed to find almost 2 hours had past me by. I highly recommend this. I am back on Friday for a follow up appointment and for the first time in 10 years I have no worries about going.

Is there any way to eliminate pre-existing plaque without dental work?

Plaque can be removed through extensive dental cleaning, but for those unable to afford steady dental services and are lacking flossing skills, is there any technique used to eliminate the plaque that's already on the teeth without having to go to a dentist?

Is there any way to eliminate pre-existing plaque without dental work?
I'm a dental Hygienist and I learned in school that the waterpik was outdated and did not work well. Then I got into a practice where many older patients where using them. These people had arthritis and I knew they weren't flossing and their gums looked GREAT. What they did was use a waterpik every day with half peroxide to half water. Plaque, the white soft bacteria film causes gum disease and this is what the waterpik with peroxide killed. You won't remove the tarter but it's the bacteria that does the most damage. Try and save your money (save all your change) and get a good scaling!! ALSO the medical community is relating gum disease BIG time to heart attach and strokes!!
Reply:...not really.
Reply:Rinse with peroxide for 2-3 min everynight and morning after brushing. Allow it to foam when you spit it out then rinse with water.
Reply:Yes. You can buy a dental tool (looks like a metal pointy pick) at CVS or pharmacy and work on the plaque. Be careful not to scratch your gums. You'll need to do some flossing to get between teeth up above the gumline. Of course nothing beats a dentist.
Reply:Brush twice a day. It will help some. But you will need to see a dentist.

Rinse with Listerine. I think it works better.
Reply:Try using a really good toothbrush and paste twice a day. Oral B has some good brushes out there that get in between your teeth and get all the goop out.
Reply:Plaque is a sticky bacteria laden soft deposit of sugars and proteins adhering to the tooth and can be removed easily by thorough tooth brushing . If however you are referring to calculus (tartar) ,that is a hard calcified material strongly adherent to the tooth which can only be safely removed at the dental office . Calculus is very destructive to the gums and supporting bone around your teeth and will eventually cause great damage .
Reply:floss without skills.
Reply:try hydrogen peroxide and mouthwash mixed, mix around for a few minutes a few times a day.
Reply:Yes, I use a dental pick. I got mine at WalMart. There are different kinds to choose from. I brush and floss every day, but the tartar still manages to come anyway. Anyway, in between dentist visits, this works well for me.

I need to get dental insurance. I am unemployed and I need a lot work and implant dental needs.?

I am suppossed to have surgery, implants and periodontal work on my teeth. Can someone tell me about a chepa insurance here in CA ?

I need to get dental insurance. I am unemployed and I need a lot work and implant dental needs.?
If you have health insurance, talk with them about adding a dental policy to your plan. It will usually takes up to six months to take effect on dental work, but automatically kicks in for cleanings.
Reply:The dental insurance plans I have looked at do not cover implants, if you find one please let me know. If I were you I would approach the dental school I know that some school offer free care for work by students who are under supervision of a dentist. You could aslo consider going south of the border since you are in California as you will still have to pay a load even with dental insurance.
Reply:Dental implant surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and Lasik surgery in India by a company called Indian Health Guru Consultants. The Price for dental and Lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.

Indian Health Guru Consultants is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, Lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.

They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Dental Work - The "Tooth" about bridges and implants?

My dentist has recommended either bridge work or an implant for me. The temporary bridge is less expensive but requires continual care and will likely need to be replaced in the future at additional cost. The implant costs more but acts and functions more like a regular tooth and is permanent. Reportedly, I have enough bone in my jaw to support the implant.

I'm leaning more towards getting the implant as my preference; however, I was just wondering does anybody have any experience with either procedure? What were your results?

Thanks so much ...

Dental Work - The "Tooth" about bridges and implants?
A fixed bridge or an implant run about the same cost. Neither one can be guaranteed to last forever as there are too many variables. I've seen implants fail [due to patient neglect] in 4 years but most of the older ones I've restored are still going strong after 15 years. Implant/crowns are much easier to clean than a fixed bridge, as you clean them like a natural tooth, and will feel more like natural teeth. Crowning a tooth is always a last resort in my office. Even if the teeth on either side of the extraction site may eventually need crowns, you are better off with separate crowns rather than a bridge which ties them all together due to the cleaning factor and the extra stress on the teeth which hold the bridge. Again, go with the implant/crown and good luck!

And bald IS beautiful!
Reply:Go with the implant, you won't regret it. Bridges require work on the adjacent teeth to support the bridge and I've heard they eventually lead to gum loss.

Even though the implant is more it should last you for life, require no special care (other than flossing and brushing) and look exactly like your other teeth down to the color shade.

Make sure the dentist doing the implant has plenty of experience with placing implants. That is important to ensure success.

I've had three implants over the years and all are still there and rock solid. I can't tell they're not my permanent teeth.

Good Luck.
Reply:As a dentist I can tell you without reservation to go for the implant. In the long run, you'll love it!

And that's the "tooth"!
Reply:A bridge is not so temporary if you maintain good oral hygiene and see your hygienist regularly. The usual causes for the failure of a bridge are bone loss around the teeth that support it, or, decay in the teeth that support it. Both of these diseases are preventable. Occasionally, a bridge can loosen up but your dentist can carefully remove it, cleaned it up, and recement it. If you choose the bridge, make sure you are taught how to prevent the above-noted diseases.

As for an implant, although they are great if they are done properly and are successful, they are not maintenance-free. You must practice excellent oral hygiene techniques because a gum infection, left untreated, can cause the bone in which the implant is placed, to receed. If this happens, the implant will be lost.

Assuming you are in good health and are willing to remain in good health through honest brushing and flossing, the implant could be a good choice because it does NOT involve altering the teeth adjacent to the space. A bridge requires the placement of crowns on each tooth adjacent to the space.

Both choices function well but if money is not a problem, go with the implant and choose a doctor who has done a significant number of successful implants.
Reply:If the teeth either side of the gap have had fillings before, then a bridge would be better as it will reinforce and stop those teeth from future fractures.

If the teeth either side have never had fillings, then an implant would be the better option.

Dental work/no insurance.?

I will no longer have insurance in August. I need a lot of work done on my teeth. Is there any way that I can get insurance? I'm almost nineteen years old and i'm not a full time student yet, if that matters. I'm so scared to go because the costs are going to be sky-high.

Dental work/no insurance.?
The dental school is a good way but I wouldn't trust them for anything major. You can get dental coverage, your age and student status has nothing to do with it.

You have three options with dental.

Insurance - Depending upon the policy: cost $30-$60 per month. $50 deductible, annual maximum of $750 - $1500, waiting period up to 18 months for major work and then you're paying 50% of the charges. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With insurance you pay $414 after paying 18 months of premium (around $800 or $900). Advantage - you can use any dentist with most plans.

Discount plans - Cost - $5-$10 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Also, hardly any dentists will accept the plan and when they do you MIGHT get a 10% discount, which is about the same discount you can get by paying cash. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With discount plans you pay around $746.

Fee for Service discount plans - Cost $7-$15 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Many dentist will accept the plan (check providers first before signing up with any plan). When you use the plan there is a set fee that the dentist will charge you. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With fee for service plans you pay as little as $404.

I'm an insurance agent and my personal plan is the fee for service plan. I got mine here http://www.dpbrokers.com/default.aspx?lo... specifically the Aetna Dental Access plan but which one you get depends upon your area and comparing the fee schedule to find the best for what you need covered.
Reply:HI,

GET ALL THE WORK DONE OR STARTED BEFORE AUGUST BECAUSE IT CAN BE COVERED IF BILLED BY THAT DATE.
Reply:If you have no other choice go to a University where they teach dentistry. They do a good job. The students are well supervised by professors that have degrees in D.D.S. and some have M.D.'s. as well.
Reply:Get the work done before August. I had to do the same thing a month before leaving my job. Take the earliest appt your dentist has to allow room to book more appts before the insurance expires. Don't forget the cleaning appt too. Or some dentists take payments. Couldn't hurt to ask. Or there are dental credit cards that some dentists offer or your credit card provider may offer. Or try a dental school in your area. I've had work done and no problem, the work is great. They're nice and to reg ppl, feels just like any dental place. If you like your insurance now, try to find out if they offer plans to individuals. Or check to see if your medical provider also offers dental plans. That way they're linked up and some offer discounts if you do. Good luck!
Reply:if your able to look up dental plans that arent insurance they are cheap if you can look up eastern dental they are cheap...

Dental work, leaving baby with grandma and no stored breastmilk?

I am having four extractions on Wednesday and baby will be with my mom for a good part of the day.

I have been trying like mad to pump with the cheapo pump from the hospital, with no avail.

Looks like I am going shopping tomorrow, for a better pump and some formula and bottles.

Money is tight; I don't need a buttload of formula, as this will be an isolated incident (I hope).

Any tips for pumping (and quick?) How much will I need for say, a six hour absence, either formula or breastmilk? If better pump doesn't work, what kind of bottles and nipples?

Baby is 1 month and never had a bottle.

I am going crazy over this.

Dental work, leaving baby with grandma and no stored breastmilk?
I wouldn't bother trying to find a bottle baby will take at this point. Go to a drugstore and get some large syringes, some of the tiny medicine cups (if available), and or some of those medicine spoons that usually look like alligators where the body fills with medicine and the mouth despenses it(does that describe them). Any or all of these can be used to feed a baby that won't take a bottle and they won't cause nipple confusion.

Pump one side while baby feeds on the other. Try doing 2-3 feeds on one side so the other gets engorged (this will make it easier to pump)

*IF* you can't pump (and remember a 1 month old is only going to be taking probably 1-3oz per feed, actually most breastfed babies take less than 3-4 oz per feed when feeding on the breast). I wouldn't necessarily give formula. Baby isn't going to starve to death in 6 hours. Yes 1 month is a little young to consistantly go that long at night BUT we are talking about one time. And babies can and have been sensitized to milk or soy protein from one bottle of formula. One bottle of formula also will change the flora and pH in your babies digestive tract for about 2 weeks.

If at ALL possible have grandma bring the baby with you to the hospital/office. Things are often delayed. Feed baby just before you go in, and as soon as you have enough motor control to hold baby after the surgery/treatment you can feed baby again.

Anesthesia is NOT a reason to discontinue breastfeeding and in almost all cases the reason they tell you to is they don't want to deal with baby around or they figure "better safe than sorry" but that doesn't address the safety of formula or the consequences to moms supply and the breastfeeding relationship.

IF THE HOSPITAL/DENTIST/ANESTHEIOLIGIST WILL NOT BELIEVE YOU AND WILL NOT "ALLOW" YOU TO BREASTFEED: (well firstly they can't really stop you, what are they going to do post a nurse at your door and tell you that baby isn't allowed in the room).

Have them call motherisk and motherisk will explain it to them:

(416) 813-6780 mon-fri 9-5
Reply:its probally cause your worring to much to pump your breast!!! i know the doctors told me if im trying to hard or not in breast feeding "mind" it wont work!!! try being in a really warm room and watch your baby or look at pictures!!!

but if nothing works its ok to give a little formula sometimes!!
Reply:If you want a decent pump... get the avent manual... 40 bucks or so.

Just pump after your baby nurses. Do it around the clock. I like the avent bottles, because it's a wide nipple, which mimics the breast.

If you plan on leaving the baby for about 6 hours, i would have about 16 ounces on hand... (all depends on how much your baby usually eats. But pump after every feed, and even thru the night.

Best of luck to you!
Reply:Avent bottle works great that kind bottle of my youngest would take. I breastfeed him. Or playtex kind that support breastfeeding. If you going to give the baby one time of formula get soy kind that want the hospital give to my mom since I had to have a emergancy surgery when he was about two months old and I couldn't breastfeed. Would need to pump 4 oz for the every feeding that you be gone..
Reply:Oh Boy!! I would go and get a good pump before I went out and bought formula and a bunch of bottles, the baby may not take htem and then you wasted oyur money, try the good pump first, to see how much you get (at least 2-8oz bottles) then if you think it wont be enougth go for the formula! Good luck
Reply:since your baby has never had a bottle before i would def go and buy 1 dr brown bottle. its speciallly made so the baby doesnt get any air (which can cause problems) and since your baby has never had a bottle before he/she may be really sensitive to the extra air the most bottle leave behind. Stage 1 nipples are the right ones for the age. But dr brown bottle are a little expensive but def. worth it. My son had lots of problems with normal bottles because of the air and since i started him on Dr. Brown's he's fabulous!!
Reply:at almost 2 months old, my baby started drinking out of the bottle but she would only use playtex drop in bottles because the nipples are more like the breast nipple. make sure you buy the nipples that are SLOW, not fast for her age. i highly doubt she'll drink more than 4 ounces every 2 to 3 hours. just take a can of formula over there and take back home whatever she doesnt use. my daughte loves good start (the purple can). if u cant get any milk for her, DO NOT leave her! she'll need food you can reschedule. shes more important and doesnt need to be hungry for 6 hours.
Reply:Pump one breast WHILE you are nursing on the other. You should be able to get a LOT more out.

See if you can't rent a pump...

Grandma can feed baby via a spoon, a cup, a dropper...check kellymom.com; there are plenty of ways to feed babies besides bottles.

(Is the dental work urgent? With a newborn, I would've postponed it if it was possible to do so.)
Reply:I didn't breast feed my kids but I did give them enfamil formula which you can also purchase a box of pre-measured that all you have 2 do is pour into the bottle I hope this helps a little.
Reply:If your baby is 1 month, she might need 1 or 2 feedings in the 6 hrs you will be apart. If the bottle isn't working, have your mom try a sippy cup, regular cup, or small washcloth dipped in breastmilk to suck on. But also consider, if she doesn't take the bottle from your mom, she will be OK for that short amount of time. Probably cranky %26amp; VERY ready to nurse when you get back, but OK.

To pump more quickly, try drinking LOTS of water and drinking Fenugreek tea.
Reply:I know it's easy to say, but try to be calm and relaxed as this will help your milk production. My daughter used nuk teats after having difficulty with other teats as a newborn. If I were starting with another baby, I would use nuk as they are good for babies who experience difficulties with other teats and are also good for preventing colic.

I wouldn't recommend the very cheapest bottles as they can leak and be awkward to assemble, but I l love the cheapest Tommee Tippee bottles. For formula, my daughter has always used Karicare Gold Plus. It isn't cheap, but I want her to have the best possible nutrients (I wanted to breastfeed, but was unable to).

I hope you recover quickly!
Reply:For bottles, get the platex nurser with the disposable liners, or Sassy Mam ultivent bottles. Both are wide, and nipple like. Avent, dr browns and a few others contain the chemical BPA in the plastic which can cause harm to infants. I used them not knowing the first 6 weeks.
Reply:I just wanted to say: Do not let anyone make you feel bad if you have to do what you have to do. Yes! Dental work can be severely urgent! My guess is you have an abscessed tooth and it could kill you. People, you need to think before you judge! I had a severely herniated disk (after bad fall) and was in the hospital unconscious for 2 days and unable to walk for 3. I was so drugged, I do not remember most of it. My daughter had to go back to formula during that time and she is now still on it because I spent two weeks on my tummy in hospital (only way to get comfy) and in severe pain or drugged. Reply:Is it at all possible to bring baby with you? I was put out and had teeth extracted with bfing a 1 week old baby and had no problems at all. Had grandma watch baby while I was undergoing surgery. Dr. says very tiny amounts of anesthesia pass through breastmilk, not enough to harm the baby. Problem solved! Just nurse right before your appointment, and baby should be fine for a few hours...long enough for your procedure and meds to wear off a bit.
Reply:Ok, first of all relax...

It'll only be 6 hours!!

Quick question...does baby take a soother yet? Because if yes, chances on bottle are acceptance are great... If not, oh well.

Another option...check with local drug stores/pharmacies to see if they rent pumps. (I know majority do here in Canada and they're the good ones!)

Usually an electric pump is better than a manual one ( I bought a Medala mini electric for a reasonable amount of $$)

If you can't get enough milk this way, then just grab 1 can of ready to serve formula from your grocery store. (1 day of it is not going to hurt baby...I used Good Start for one day until my milk came in)

Bottles all depend on baby...usually the best bet is a Playtex bottle as their nipples best resemble the breast. (you can buy these in singles too, and they come with a few liners) If baby already takes a soother then your chances are good about a bottle and possibly just a regular bottle/nipple would probably work.

here, found link for you on bottle that I find works best for my 2.5 month old in a pinch.

Reply:I am an expert when it comes to the breastpump thing. I pumped exclusively for a year. Anyway, it's worth it to spend the money on a Medela Pumpinstyle! You are waisting your time when dealing with a not so good electric pump. They have the Medela PIS at Target, or rent one from the hospital. The Medela pumps that you rent are really good. I would feed with one breast and pump the other. Also, the Medela feeding kit that comes with the bottles and storage tops is awesome (Target). The bottles are also BPA chemical free! Great bottles for babies that are breastfeed.

Dental braces taking too long to work?

I've had braces since May of 2006 to close my gap. I've had them for over a year now and my progress is moving pretty slow. Are there any cases that people have had braces and they didn't work? This is beginning to be very frustrating. Please help!

Dental braces taking too long to work?

Dental work for cheap?

My teeth need alot of work. Last time I was quoted was 3,000.

I do not have that kinda money. I have done my best to take care of my teeth, but due to things that I did when I was a teen, they are chipping and breaking and I have had alot pulled. I have just 11 teeth left on the bottom. Should I get them all removed? I was thinking about Pemenets but feel that it iwll be expensive. My top teeth are still doing a little good a few cavadys thats all. my mouth is starting to hurt a little more here and there and I would like to know if someone in the Houston area is resonble in price. Please help

Dental work for cheap?
Houston, we have a problem!

$3k for all the problems you are describing is cheap. I'd jump on it.

As far as the advice on voting for a Democrat, I really don't think Hillary, Obama or any of the other candidates know how to perform dentistry. (Although they probably will tell you that they do.)

If you really have a lot of the problems as you are describing and have no $$$$$ means to handle then your best bet may be to get them extracted and full dentures. Save them if you can but I totally realize the practical situations people have in their lives.

Good Luck
Reply:go to the dental school ,they always need volunteers to practice on and they are supervised by dds
Reply:One bottle of Jack Daniels, a pair of needle-nose pliers, three tubes of epoxy and a pack of chiclets will only cost you about $35 and might be easier.

I am feeling hopeless because I can't afford the dental work I need. Please, if anyone has any information ?

Hello. I am a 43 yr old female who has been told by a dentist that I need full dental implants. He said that I probably had Juvenile Periodontal Disease from an early age that was not very common or diagnosed when I was a teen. I have already lost teeth from this problem. The teeth start to get loose and eventually fall out. I have some temporary denture like appliances to make my teeth look complete. But, more teeth are shifting and loosening and I know that I am going to have to do something drastic, like dentures or implants. The implant cost is so astronomical. I don't know what to do. I live in Los Angeles and I was wondering if anyone knew of any dental schools or other means of finding a more affordable alternative in this city. Please help, if you can with any information. You know, I used to take my great smile for granted when I was younger, and now I would be grateful just to bite into an apple again.

I am feeling hopeless because I can't afford the dental work I need. Please, if anyone has any information ?
try calling local dental colleges or dentists and see if there are any low cost clinics avail
Reply:Ask your doctor if you can go on a payment plan to pay "off" your dental work.

or try getting health insurance to pay for this.

Go to another dentist and get another quote.
Reply:Contact USC dental school. They may have low cost programs for dentist in training. UCLA also has a dental school.

Reply:You should look into this insurance. I got it for us when my husband was in a lot of pain. It's $15.50 a month for 1 person . The receptionist said it was a very good insurance because you don't have a yearly limit like most other dental insurances. And there is no waiting period before having major dental work done. You can start using it right away. Just take a look at it. It tells you how much you would pay. And most dentist will let you make payments for the co-payment. But they are very good prices. My mom had work done and payed $2000. With this she would of payed about $400. But I didn't know about it yet.

click on Pacificare Signature Value...not the Savings one...

It has the application and the co-payment amounts.
Reply:Really don't know, because I don't live in America, but as you say you'll need a lot of work. The best would be implants but not the only one solution.

How much cost implants and dentures at your dentist. Here where I live in Europe one implant cost about 1000€ and one denture about 700€. I think the prices are very low and quality is top.

I don't know your teeth status, but I think you don't need implants at beginning.
Reply:Dental implants are the Hollywood version of replacement teeth- they may be the best thing overall for replacements but regular removable dentures can also work very well as long as they are fitted properly and you, the patient has a realistic expectation of how they will function.

Implants do pretty much totally replace the teeth and can be a huge boost to ones self esteem but they are also a very high ticket item and can line the dentists pocket with gold.

I wear full removable dentures and I am your age- they work well for me and they look very natural. I do not have any eating issues and have learned to eat apples!

Feel free to contact me off the board if you want to discuss this.

Dental work after having a baby?

My baby is now 16 weeks old. I would love to have my teeth straightened and whitened. Does anyone know if I can get this work done for free while I still have my maternity exemption??

Dental work after having a baby?
That is classed a cosmetic surgery and is therefore not available on the NHS.

Your maternity exemption lasts a year so make the most of it.

Congrats on your recent birth :D
Reply:dont think you will be able to get this done free....
Reply:No I don't believe that you would get that as its cosmetic dental work and that as far as I know isn't covered on the NHS.

Check with your dentist.
Reply:Cosmetic work is not free
Reply:Not unless you are an immigrant claiming free housing etc, etc, etc, etc.

Anyone know how to get volunteered free dental work?

i don't have any dental insurance and i have a tooth that is KILLING ME and it needs to be yanked!!

Anyone know how to get volunteered free dental work?
Dental schools are an excellent place to have dental procedures done at a very low cost. The students always need patients to work on and they are well supervised by their instructors who are dentists. Another option would be for you to contact your health department... many cities now have dental clinics in their health departments. However, it is probably not very likely that you are going to be able to have it done completely free of charge, though the fee will be minimal and is often on a 'sliding fee scale'.

If neither of the above is an option for you, I would suggest you go to an emergency room to, at the very least, have an antibiotic prescribed to you. If your tooth is hurting that badly then there is likely to be infection in the pulp (nerve) of the tooth and you need an antibiotic to clear that up so the infection does not spread to any other areas of your body. Left untreated, an infection in a tooth could land you in a hospital for an extended vacation or at the very worst, it could possibly even cause death.

Help! I dont have dental insurance and I need dental work....?
Look up a dental college and give them a call or walk in. We use to sit there all day if they said there was no space. Sometimes someone cancels. I've had several things done at very low cost. Another option is to get a dental credit card. It's long term at low interest. Or ask if you dentist offers payment plans. If you are a student, ask if they offer any discounts. My sister asked and they offered 10% off the bill, she just had to provide proof. Glad she asked. =) Also look to see if they offer plans. Places like western dental. Or ask about dental plans from medical insurance companies (kaiser, blue cross, delta dental, etc.) I have Blue Cross and it costs $18 a month but some are cheaper. Good luck!
Reply:Find a local dental school, the students there will do all your dental work for a cheaper rate or maybe for free.
Reply:look in your phone book~ sometimes towns have small clinics that will let you put some money down and then pay it off in payments!

good luck!!
Reply:I am in the same predicament as you. I do not have dental insurance, and I need alot of work done. I don't understand why my teeth are acting the way they are. I brush 2 times a day, and I still get cavities.

I can't afford to flat out pay for all the work to be done. But I am researching some dental plans. They are not insurance plans, but discounted plans. For one person it is about $10 a month, and for a family a few dollars more. Just google dental plans. Hope this helps!
Reply:If there is a dental school in your area, you might want to give that a try. Their fees are about half that of a private dentist.

Hope this helps a little.
Reply:Dental schools or community dental clinics might be a good choice.

Beware of so-called "discount dental plans" which promise things they can't deliver.

Some say they will save you up to 50% of the dentist's normal fees. That just isn't possible. A dentist needs some profit margin in order to pay rent, employees, insurance, labs, etc. In order to accept "discount" patients, they must find a way to increase their fees or add treatment that isn't covered in order to make up the loss.

You'd be better off putting the money they charge for these "non-insurance plans" in the bank and saving towards your treatment.
Reply:the company i work for supplies discount dental you save up to 80% on dental including caps and crowns, ORTHODONTICS, teeth whitening, cleanings xrays etc for only $11.95 a month!! alot of people get this because they dont have dental and they all save ALOT of money. plus you get vision (lasik surgery eyeglasses contact lenses, etc) prescription, and chiropractic care at no additional cost its all included!!! please at least email me and ill send you the link i cant do it here because i cant solicit so email me and ill send you the link and you can even sign up from there!!

Dizziness and other symptoms caused by dental work?

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

I broke a tooth with a filling in it . . . shortly after my next dental cleaning visit, I became very sick (strange abdominal pains, kidney pains and fatigue), and then had an episode of fainting / tunnel vision, followed by persistent dizziness, fatigue, sensitivity to noises/light, heavy head, ringing in ears, etc., etc.

Three months later I had a flu shot (more mercury??) and about ten days later experienced the worst headache I had ever had. I then developed face pain which has never gone away.

Doc visits have been entirely useless . . . I have seen two ENT specialists, a neurologist, cardiologist, pain specialist, opthalmologist, audiologist, and had MRIs and CT scans aplenty. I've tried two different migraine medications, neither one did anything. Have ruled out meniere's disease and sinus problems. Does this sound like mercury filling-related problems to anyone? I understand it's a controversial subject.

Dizziness and other symptoms caused by dental work?
If you had novacaine that may trigger a few side effects but it could also just be your sub-consious. Check that the migraine medication that you took doesn't have side effects. Feel better and relax.
Reply:You're not alone. I've noticed symptoms as well when I first got a filling (never had a cavity in my life). Dizziness so bad I thought I was dying and stomach cramps. I was on a ton of anti-biotics which really messed me up. After the dentist numbs me I will have these weird muscle spasms, leg twitches, kicking etc. The dentist thinks I'm just nervous...But I KNOW there is something in that shot I'm reacting to.

The only thing that seems to help relieve my cramps is Kefir. It's a probiotic drink you can find in the dairy case. More powerful than yogurt. I would also suggest to juice apple, carrot, and cilantro. Cilantro removes heavy metals from your body. Distilled water with a splash of RAW apple cider vinegar helps aid in digestion as well. Try to go on organics and READ labels.

You can also try ear candles (available from health food store or online). Sweating is the best way to remove toxins as well. You can also google "oil pulling" this has helped me as well.

I probably sound like a charlatan but I know it's helped me. I hope you'll feel better soon!

Changes in roof of mouth after dental work? Dentists please!?

I've been having dental problems (see previous questions), underwent one root canal...and now the ridges in the roof of my mouth feel different??? Only on one spot, one of the ridges feels *much* larger than it did before (or any of the other ones), it's kind of painful too. It doesn't seem like it's too swollen, it feels hard, like bone...weird. any ideas?

Changes in roof of mouth after dental work? Dentists please!?
seems like you have got infection in the periapical area of the tooth(i.e the area which surrounds the end of the root) which has spread to the bone and has resulted in bone loss which may be replaced by the granulomatous tissue (the infected tissue). this often results in the change in perception of the tissue and inflammation of the soft tissues of the oral cavity, thus leading to odd sensation. furthermore, the area you are describing i.e the palatal area doesn't contain much of muscle as the skin is attached directly to the periosteum (outer covering of the bone). thus any pus or oedema in that area is quite painful. the best treatment or it is drainage of pus. it can be done either way i.e either from making the hole in the tooth or else surgically. the root canal therapy will just make a passage for the drainage of the pus from the tooth so that all the infected pus and other tissues is removed later it can be filled so that any further infection isn't caused. but sometimes the amount of pus or the lesion is so big that it can't be removed by RCT. then we need to open up that area and treat it surgically. the exact treatment plan can be chalked out only after examination. so i advise you to consult a gud endodontologist who will be able to relieve ur pain and return the tooth to it's functional state.

I am lookig for free dental work?
isn't everyone?
Reply:call a dental school in your area and ask about their services.
Reply:go to or phone a college in your area . students need volunteers to practise on but beware of first and second year people
Reply:The availability of free dental clinics will vary from city to city. If you live in a larger metropolitan area, check with local social service departments (medicaid office, family independence agency, whatever it's called in your area) and they may be able to refer you to free clinics. Unfortunately, free dentistry is much more scarce than free "medical assistance" for low income families. It's out there, but just not common. You could also try calling local dentist offices...they may be able to refer you. On rare occasion, you'll find a dentist that does "pro bono" work as an advertising tool as well.
Reply:it's rare that you will be able to get free dental work. University students need volunteers so contact your nearest dental school.

They arent as bad as you think, they wouldnt let them loose if they werent able to act clinically. Also they are smart people to get in for the course and pass the exams necessary. So they wont exactly screw your teeth up that bad.

It totally depends on what you are looking to be done.
Reply:I don't know about free dental work, but I know that my dental school has discounted rates.

Also in my school you don't see patients until your 3rd year and all your work/treatment plans etc have to be approved/signed off by a licensed dentist.
Reply:Contact your local college or uni..they are often looking for guinea pigs to practice on...at greatly reduced rates..but your visits will be much longer..probably 3 hours as there are students learning and practicing...they are usually 3 rd year students...and well supervised.. Good luck
Reply:Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients.

Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale.

Your local United Way may also be aware of such a clinic. In some areas, you can reach them now by dialing 2-1-1 for "non-emergency information."

Go to a dental school, if there is one near you, for reduced costs.

Check http://www.toothwoman.net to see if low-cost or free dental services are available near you.

Check http://bphc.hrsa.gov and choose "Find a Health Center" to see if there is a low-cost clinic near you.

Check http://www.nfdh.org/DDS.html to see if your state has a "Donated Dental Services" program. D.D.S. is designed to locate dentists who will give free care to patients who are financially compromised due to medical problems. This is a process that will take a couple of months to get your information and then arrange for someone to see you. Not all states have D.D.S. programs.

I want to be a dental hygienist but all I hear is horror stories about how horrible dentists are to work for.?

Are all dentists jerks? Also, do dental hygienists receive health benefits?

I want to be a dental hygienist but all I hear is horror stories about how horrible dentists are to work for.?
Not all dentists are "jerks" although I've heard much worse. You should realize that the patients that are seen at the dental office are "his or her" patients, not yours. They come to the office for treatment based on the dentist knowledge of dentistry, his compassion, and their trust in him. So he/she may or may not deserve to be a "jerk" at times. Most of these employees who have referred to their boss negatively, would never dare to admit that they did something wrong or over stepped their boundaries causing their dentist boss to reprimand them. I think it’s the same with any job that has a boss. Although, everyone has their good and their bad days, so who is to really say?

One huge factor you might want to consider is that as a hygienist you will work without constant supervision through the most part of your time with each patient. Although this may have draw backs, you must be a “good” hygienist; otherwise you will be under the gun all day long and won't last too long with a good dentist. Doctors do not like to have to do your work for you because you missed a piece of calculus or tartar which makes them "need" to check your work more thoroughly with every patient. Unlike an assistant who must work hand in hand with the dentist and must have the personality to work well with him and his patients, along with keeping an eye on placing the patients concerns, fears, questions “first above all else.”

Insurance will usually depend on how many employees there are at a given office and if they are full time or part time employee‘s. Full time is considered to be a “four” day work week for most practices. The employees are a deciding factor for most dentists since more and more of them are demanding health insurance for themselves and their families. It is also good to have as an incentive when hiring new employees. Most all do "offer" it, but you pay for it usually at a reduced price based on the insurance that is offered and the plan needed. It is something to be concerned with at any age; everybody gets sick at some time in their life.

Most all dental work is usually taken care of by the doctor with charges only for lab fees. If an employee has dental insurance it is usually accepted as payment for services by most dentist.

I hope that I've been of some help and not scared you away from dental work! It's a wonderful position that you can be proud of, which offers you the opportunity to make a difference with so many patients’ lives. Good luck with your future plans in dentistry.

Additional information: Asking a question such as this one, will get a lot of negative responses as any job would. Not everyone "likes or loves" their boss no matter what type of work they do. It's up to you to have a positive attitude, find a doctor that you think you can work well with, negotiate your package or benefits prior to accepting a position, try several days of work just as a "fill in" person to see what the office and dentist are like, you may not like the other employees either. You will get a lot of different remarks about the dentist and other employees from prospective co-workers; don't base your entire opinion on just one person’s comments though. As in any job, you have to find your nitch, even if it takes you several years to do it. Your main concern should be in learning your chosen career and be satisfied with that. A lot of negative remarks are from people who were dissatisfied with their job, not just their employer. Find out for your self and make your own decisions.
Reply:yes they are all jerks. And usually they are offered benefits.
Reply:Yes they are complete jerks.

Benefits depends on the office setup. Sometimes the hygienists are considered sub-contractors and not employees, so there would be no benefits offered.
Reply:I have worked for 3 dentists and only one was a jerk. You just have to find the right office. As far as benefits go...most offices (not all) only have you 2-3 days a week and have multiple hygienists to rotate during the full work week. I think this is partially due to paying benefits out. So even though they always have one in the office for 4-5 days/week....usually you only get 2-3 days of work because of job share.
Reply:It is very hard to find a good dentist to work for. At the office that I worked for we did not receive health benefits but at the second office that I worked at the dentist was great to work for and she paid a percent of our health insurance. You could always ask if you could come in and observe the office and see what you think of the dentist. We had a girl do that. Good luck with what you decide to do.
Reply:I've worked for several dentists in my time in dental offices. Really it's all a matter of weather or not your personalities clash. And being a hygienist, you don't actually work with the dentist all day as the assistants do. That's where most of the stress can come from. Usually the hygienist will stay in her room all day seeing patient after patient as the doctor comes in to do the exams, and that's about it.

Depending on what the office policy is you could in fact receive benifits, especially if you are the full time hygienist. And not all offices have more than one, but busier offices might. Usually your doctor will do any dental work you need and may cut a deal where he/she will pay a certain amount of your health insurance. These are things you want to look for and ask during your interview to be sure this is the office you really want to be in. I've even heard of hygienists finding new jobs by going through a temp agency and they were covering for someone who, say, is on leave for pregnancy, but decided they didn't want to return...and that office offered the temp hygienist a job. So long as she really liked the place...

I do have to say that all dentists have their quirks....

First dentist I ever worked for was INSANE!!! Not to mention he was japanese...and talked like a total fruitcake.... he would go through our personal belongings, pull out a tampon and start walking around the office trirling it around and later dipped it into a glass of water to "see how obsorbant it was". hmm... what else, oh yes, and he had the nerve to actually as me if my blood (on my period) was a pretty color red, because his mom's is... Later he explains that he can get away with saying certain things around women because he's "just like one of the girls"... yet he specifically claims that he's "not a fa*got"...I could go on all day with stories..So first dentist, a bit of an identity issue...but I dealt with it...he also got sued by 2 employees..

Second dentist: My first day there he brings a people magazine over and has a page with Jennifer Aniston on it and talks about how hot she is... He's kind of like one of those guys that's entering his 40's and still wants to think he's cool. Yes, he's a buff good looking guy, but man he has lady issues. Not to mention going through his second divorce with a 2 year old. So this one was kind of an egomaniac..

Another dentist: Kind of getting to be old. Can't hear out of his left ear and mumbles when he talks, yet he yells at YOU when you mumble. So these combinations of things create problems. When he asks you for something and he talks so low that you can't hear him and you ask him to repeat himself, but he doesn't hear you say that...there's an awkward silence of you looking at him, him looking at you like "aren't you gonna get it???".... That's stressfull, but lucky for hygienists... you wouldn't have to deal with him all day long...

Current Dentist: So awesome. Finally someone I can actually relate to. My boss is a woman dentist and the whole vibe of the office is completely different that anywhere I've ever been. She's very aware of what's going on, calm, easy to talk to, and is like a completely normal person. We all have a lot of fun, joke around, and talk about normal things. It just took time to find a place I can feel comfortable in and not have to feel like I'm being fake and acting like I'm someone else just to fit in.

So no, not all dentists are jerks! It just takes the right combination of personalities to make the office run smoothly. It might take some time to find that, but hey it took me 4 years to find my home. It'll take lots of patience but eventually you'll survive it. ;)
Reply:I have been a hygienist for 19 years and was a dental assistant for 10 years prior to that....I have work in 3 different states and my experience is that dentist are wierd people. Most of them have no "people skills", much less any ability to manage a staff. Dental schools don't seam to teach students how to manage people....how to motivate their staff.. I have worked for men who think that the paycheck is all the thanks anyone needs. I have worked for men who had sexually explicit pictures hanging in the lab. I have worked for a women pediatric dentist who regularly worked us through our lunch hour (without pay) and then the one time we might finish at 5 minutes til 12:00 and she says "Does everyone have something to do?" I have worked for dentist who's office was next door to another dental office. The girls from both offices were friends but the dentists did not like each other. One of the dentist told his staff they were NOT allowed to go to lunch with the other girls!! I have never had ANY benefits or paid days off at any of the offices I have worked in. I have worked for dentist who expected their hygienist and/or assistants to miss or be late to any events their children might be in..like a soccer match. We were suppose to get off at 5:00 but he thought nothing of keeping us there until 6:00pm! He said we just shouldn't plan on attending any "after school" events!! But then he would cancel an entire day of work to travel out of town to attend his children's events AND not pay us. Don't tell me that it is the staff's fault or personality differences. Dentist are the most egotistical and cheap people I have ever meet!! If you go into the hygiene career, ALSO ask for a working interview. I have been interviewed by dentist who seemed nice until you go to work for them. Also, be wary of dentist with lots of turnover.

Where can i get decent dental work done that doesn't cost a fortune?

any ideas. my teeth are starting to suffer. i have no dental insurance at all.

Where can i get decent dental work done that doesn't cost a fortune?
Check local colleges; if they have dentistry or dental hygienists training, they need people to work on; ie dental work at a lower cost. Don't worry, they have supervision. Most have waiting lists- so check their procedures.

You can look at the college/university web site, sometimes they will have patient information, services provided, pricing and hours listed there.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Go to a place that trains dental technicians and/or dentists. The prices are free, or at least reduced. There is a down side to this - these people are NOT experienced - they are supervised, but they aren't experts... yet.

I married my norwegian husband 5 months ago, and lately i've been having some severe pains in my mouth... I believe its my wisdom teeth trying to come in. It hurts to open my mouth, and it also hurts to eat and swallow. I have no money to pay for the procedure of having them removed, so i was wondering if there were any place here in norway where i can find free emergency dental care. Someone please help me. I cant take this pain in my mouth any longer.

Can i get free dental work in Norway?
If you are under 18 you get it for free.

If you are between 18 and 19 you get a 50% discount

If you are over 19 you have to pay yourself. It will probably be around 5000 kroner.

Gratulerer med bryluppet:)

How does my Canadian health insurance and dental cards work?

I live in Ontario and I got the first permanent job in my life, so I finally have benefits for once, but I don't know how to use my health insurance and dental insurance. Do I have to pay up front then get compensated later, or will the insurance be able to immediately take care of the cost of trips to the dentist or doctor? I'm hoping the cost can be taken care of right away because I can't afford to pay for expensive visits to the dentis up front, even if I will get the money back later. How much does the average dental check up cost in Canada because I haven't been to one since I was a teenager? I need new glasses, so would this be covered under my insurance too? Thanks for any info, preferably from fellow Canadians.

How does my Canadian health insurance and dental cards work?
Its going to depend. My employer and my wife's employer both use the same company. However the policies both companies have are different with regards to payouts.

Trips to the doctor should be covered by OHIP. Most plans will not cover optometrist visits.

For the dentist give your card to their admin, they can figure it out. My policy pays for their portiion of the coverage right away and I only have to pay for the remainder on the spot. My wife's plan she has to pay 100% at the dentist, but the covered amount is direct deposited to her bank in 1-2 business days. Most dentists take credit cards now.

Check your plan formulary for eyeglass coverage. My plan has $0 coverage and my wife's is $200 every two years. (You'd think a tech company would have eyeglass coverage since 80% of the staffing complement is nerds)

The dentist is going to try and get you to do a full set of xrays and possibly two cleanings if you don't regularly floss (there might be a lot of build up). You might be looking at $300 in the Toronto area.

Does bone graft for dental implants work well?

My original dental implant broke and it requires either

nothing !! (no tooth)

or bone graft and new implant

Does bone graft for dental implants work well?
It depends on the location of the tooth. An upper front tooth may be under too much stress(think eating a sub sandwich) to hold the implanted tooth and graft.See a good oral surgeon for an opinion in your case.
Reply:Dental implants can be a costly procedure. An entire team of professionals are needed to deliver a long-lasting smile. Implant procedures demand a great deal of the doctor's and staff's time and effort. The prosthodontist intensely studies your health profile, and then develops a plan to meet your unique needs. Additionally, surgical staff and the laboratory perform several services to produce the desired result. The materials used to construct implant prosthodontics are also very expensive. Bone grafting, if needed, is additionally costly.

While a basic implant is typically $1,250. to $3,000., depending on your circumstances additional costs for things such as in the case of a posterior mandible, bone regeneration, sinus elevation, and wide diameter or narrow diameter implants quickly escalate to as much as $15,000 to $30,000. for the complete procedure for the upper or lower jaw.

How much do you dental hygienists make in the SoCal area? I want to move to the OC and work as a hygienist.?

Please don't respond with salaries or hourly pay from other areas of the country. I'm specifically looking for how much dental hygienists make in the Southern California area, like around Orange County. If you are a hygienist working in that area or know of someone who is and knows how much they get paid, let me know. Thank you.

How much do you dental hygienists make in the SoCal area? I want to move to the OC and work as a hygienist.?
They typically make $50 an hour and see 1 patient per hour.
Reply:Go to salary.com. They will tell you the median range for that area

I have a relative who needs free dental work,?

because she doesn't have the funds. Where can you get dental assistance for this problem in California? She just began a new job so her dental insurance will not cover this huge pre-existing condition. Please help!

I have a relative who needs free dental work,?
Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients.

Not all states have D.D.S. programs.
Reply:Good luck with out a job she could have use public services, and gotten medicaid or just the medical card through welfare
Reply:I can't tell you of anywhere that does "free work". They usually charge at least a small fee. Dental schools are a good place to go, but she needs to understand that she is going to have students working on her and it may take 3 times longer than it normally would at a real office.
Reply:Tell her to call a dental college, they often do work for free or really cheap so that the students can get hands on practice, and all with no worries as they dont let them work on you unless they are at the proper level and all work is supervised.

If I need extensive dental work, but can't afford it, can I just request to get dentures instead?

It just seems like it would be less hassle, as well as more affordable to have my teeth extracted and have dentures made than it would be for me to pay to custom fix all my dental problems. so, on average, how much would it cost to have all your teeth extracted and have dentures made?

If I need extensive dental work, but can't afford it, can I just request to get dentures instead?
How many teeth do you have left? You can figure at least $100 - 150 a tooth for extractions. Dentures will cost roughly around $5000 or more. Depends on your area. These won't be the last set of dentures you'll have. You will also need relines occasionally when your gums shrink and when you remove teeth, your bone and gums do shrink. If you live to a really old age (like many of us are these days), you may not have enough bone to even hold a denture. It really depends on how young you are when you get them.

You should consider maybe trying to fix one tooth at a time. Fix the worst ones first and just try to keep them clean and free of lots of sugar. If you have to have a denture, try saving your bottom teeth and getting an upper denture. They seem to be easier to wear than the lower one.

The problem with extracting your teeth....you can't change your mind and go back.
Reply:that is exactly the route i went, i had been in a car accident and had spent over 5000 out of pocket and had it only last a year and it started cracking and crumbling again, i had a cap and bridge estimate done and it would have been over 10000

i ended up paying roughly 2500 for extractions and dentures, and i bought the temp and top of the line dentures. I dont know where you live, but check your phone book for DENTURES, or check online using

dentures + your city,your state

im in virginia and i had a great place called affordable dentures--------you may also look into any dental schools in the area for lower fees. hope this helps, i was only 27 years old when i had to make this decision, but all the compliments i get on my beautiful smile make me happy,(and sometimes make me laugh when they say my daughter has the same beautiful smile as her mom---haha!!!!) what they dont know wont hurt them.
Reply:On your other post below you talked about one missing front tooth, and my recommendation was for you to get a dental flipper for now. A dental flipper can offer a temporary replacement for your missing tooth while you find ways to pay for other more permanent procedures such as bridges or implants.

I don't understand, why do you want all your teeth removed?
Reply:Hi! I have been in dentistry for over 25 years. I don't know your age but if you are under 40 the answer is no. Dentures are a problem. You are wearing hard plastic that sits on soft tissue. You need adhesive as you bone shrinks because of the loss of the roots of the teeth and you will be miserable. You face muscles will also collaspe and you will age quicker and look older than you are. More importantly, eating, laughing and smiling will be difficult when they come loose and you feel them move in your mouth. And forget a great love life. I had a patient come in in tears because her denture feel out after a night of romance and her partner found it under his shoulder.

You can request anything. But PLEASE get an informed decision from a good dentist. Maybe payment plans would work or a slow step by step to get your mouth in shape and keep the teeth you have and wear a partial denture instead while you earn more monies to get more permanent bridgework done. Please don't give up. Dentures DO NOT look natural and they need to be taken out, cleaned and soaked to keep off plaque and build up of food stains. You will not be happy. And as you get older, the dentures need to be refitted as the bone in your jaws shrink and get smaller. Most people that get dentures before 40, have little bone to saddle the ridges when they are 60. So they don't wear them and look so much older then they are.

Full mouth extractions are painful and the dentures tend to get loose quickly as the gums shrink. So typically you need another pair. This is like having a movable object in your mouth and most dentures if not cleaned everyday hold the oders of food, stain and look fake. Nothing beats the real thing even if it takes years to rehab your mouth. I hope I have convinced you to consider another alternative. Please be patient and don't jump to such a drastic conclusion you will regret. If you have any other questions, PLEASE ask, I will help you in any way that I can. Marie
Reply:either way it will cost you a bunch. i hope you have dental insurance. i had 1 tooth pulled it cost about $900,00. i was put to sleep for 1 tooth. this was in dentist office, to pull all of your teeth at one time, it will be in a hosptial.
Reply:Don't get dentures!!!!!!!!! I can't begin to tell you how many people who have them would go back to having their natural teeth instead. Like all prosthetics, dentures are just for looks and not for use. When you take out your teeth, you can't eat the same and nothing tastes as good as it did before. I had a patient that was in the same boat as you and we warned him how awful it would be. But he was young (22 years old) and said he was too lazy to take care of his teeth so what would be the point of trying to fix them. So, we extracted all of his teeth and gave him dentures. We saw him many, many times after that because the dentures moved around and he couldn't stand it! He also lost a lot of weight because he had so much trouble eating. He kept telling me he wished he could turn back time.

Look into Care Credit to help finance your dental needs. Or, go to a dental school where prices are much more affordable. Nobody said you had to fix it all at once; it isn't a race. Do what you can afford and you'll be happy with the investment you make.
Reply:Do not do it, Honestly I have worked along side several dentists for 10 years.

Each patient with dentures are so over it, food gets stuck under the denture, you get a lot of mouth thrush under them.

You can't eat steak, you have to chop your food up small to eat it.

You get gum ulcers, trust me...save up to get your teeth sorted out it will be the best decision you make.

Find a dentist that will give you a treatment plan, so you can pay it off.

do one tooth at a time.
Reply:Ditto to what everyone else has said. Dentures are the last resort. Most people shell out $10,000 a to $30,000 for a car and only drive it for 5 yrs. If you would spend $$ like that for your mouth it would last you until you are 6 feet under.

Anyone work as a Dental Assistant? If so, how do you like it? How much do you make?

Do you get health benefits? I am thinking about finding a job as a Dental Assistant. Do I need a certificate for it? How much do you make?

Anyone work as a Dental Assistant? If so, how do you like it? How much do you make?
I used to be a Dental Assitant and I liked it. I made anywhere from $10-$13 an hour depending on the office. There were some health benefits, but that also depended on the office. You do have to go to school for it and get certified and in some states you need to be licensed as well, you make more money if you are licensed too.
Reply:my girlfriend is a dental assistant and loves it, the hours are great, she works mon-thurs 730-330 and makes around $32k, you do have to go to school for it, you can find the cert. for it at most technical colleges

Am planning to get dental work done in Bangkok. So many dentists to choose from??

Any information re: standard, cost, hygiene, professionalism - good or bad experiences appreciated. I am having a tooth implant, one daughter is having impacted wisdom teeth out and other daughter, teeth whitening. I'm not interested in the package deal with accom. etc, just a recommended quality, reasonably priced dental practice with high standards.

Am planning to get dental work done in Bangkok. So many dentists to choose from??
I would be very careful if I were you. Standards of infection control etc. may be very different to those expected in the western world. If you are really serious about doing this I would suggest that you contact your Embassy in that country and see which dentist the senior staff use. Or, check with the licensing body for dentists that are trained in your country to see if any trained in the west are practicing in Bangkok.

Also, if you have any problems how would you have any recourse? Personally if you are contemplating doing this because of financial reasons I would strongly suggest that you contact your local school of dentistry and volunteer yourself to the students there as a patient. It will take longer to complete the case but every step of the way the work will be checked by instructors and you can be sure that it is done right to the highest standards.
Reply:Hi! I'm in dentistry. My question is why did you pick Bangkok and where are you coming from? Do you plan to be there for a long period of time? Is this a cost issue?
Reply:The standard of dentistry in Thailand is EXTREMELY POOR.

Costs of providing high standard dentistry is the same around the world. Only material costs can differ. For instance a Swedish manufactured Titanium implant costs $700 in materials whether you buy it in Australia, or China. China however make dental implants that they say are titanium, but are copper, or something very cheap and nasty. If you get an implant put in China, you only find that it destroys your jaw bone 2 years after the event, and there is no way you can go back and complain. Thailand is the same. It is why they offer cheaper dental treatment... it IS cheaper, in more ways than you have obviously considered.

I do not advise you to go to anyone outside of your local area where you live. Having good dental care is one thing, and obviously trying to get it as cheap as possible is important for the family budget, but there are long term costs to consider, and these are OBVIOUSLY not being factored into your consideration. For instance what if something goes wrong?... What is the worse thing that can happen? Have you consdeired that there is always a real chance of death, infection, maiming, or even worse, that the corrective care you go through can be far more expensive, and can only be conducted back home where you live.

Australia has the highest standard fo dentistry in the world, way up there with some Northern European Countries, and with North America. You should have the dentistry at home.

Most people in Thailand who can afford the best, go to Singapore, which is even more expensive than Australian Dentistry. Thailand is not that good. You are fooling yourself into thinking you are getting a superior service, and at dirt cheap prices.

You get what you pay for, and that's why Australia is cheaper in the long term, but more expensive in the short term. To find out more on the temporal, biological, and financial costs of dentistry, go to http://www.dentalimplantsaustralia.com/....

Don't go to Thailand to get your dentistry done!
Reply:Yes, but do they have a liscence

I feel SO overwhelmed by the dental work in front of me and the cost, that I am considering suicide. I don't

have a dentist. I don't have dental insurance. I have taken excellent care of my teeth, but a combination of an injury and side effects from medication have made a mess in my mouth and I am in pain and do not know where to turn. I wish I lived in a country where health/dental care was provided for. But I don't have the money or the energy and no dentist will help me. For some reason, the only solution that I seem to come up with is to end my life. Does anyone have any other options?

I feel SO overwhelmed by the dental work in front of me and the cost, that I am considering suicide. I don't
well first of all you have to calm down and you have to go to your doctor and explain to him what you are saying here. i am sure that they will help you to deal with this. i think there are many ways to get out of the problem rather than end up with your life. good luck!

one thing more a neighbour who was in the same situation as you are now when to do all his dental needs with university students and got a beautiful teeth for free and i am not joking his teeth are absolutely gorgeous now.
Reply:that surely is not a good reason to end your life!

there must be a social departement were you can lend money or something?!?
Reply:Yes, call 911 and tell them that you are going to hurt yourself. You need serious attention now.
Reply:killing yourself over teeth? thats the lamest thing ive ever heard! do you have health insurance? if you have no money..im sure you can get on medicaid....they cover dental

you should call the cops
Reply:Go to a dental college where the students who are about to graduate will provide services for very little money.
Reply:why cant you move to canada and get it dont there? you have got to try everything before you consider suicide.
Reply:I am overwhelmed by the same situation, not dental, vision and health care. We have no insurance right now and just got a 1200 oil bill. I still consider suicide. At least we will be out of our misery.
Reply:just have a 1500 $ return ticket to india and have a vacation there and there u can have ur dental thing and vacation. medical in india is a lot lesser like a million time then here in america.
Reply:i got the same problem, every day a misery with rotten teeth, the money to fix them £20,000 pounds, dont give up though they bug you every minite of the day there will be help somewhere
Reply:lil miss...suicide should never be the option. First of all...if there is a will there is a way...you will get this fixed if you want it bad enough. Save some money...or get dental insurance...or if anything get the work done...and if credit is not an issue...let it be...you would be amazed at the amount of people who have medical bills unpaid and a nice thing about that is...alot of creditors don't really look at that...because its so common. But its not worth losing your life over...life is precious and you will miss out on everything else it has to offer...not to mention the grief you will put your family through...i lost my father a few weeks back to cancer and its devistatating...I have been a hard time functioning...but this isn't about me...just please don't kill yourself over this...
Reply:Your teeth are no reason to kill yourself. Talk to a dentist about a payment plan. Most of the time they will work something out so that you can afford to get the needed procedures done. Regardless of if you have insurance or not. To tell you the truth dental insurance doesn't really pay a lot anyway. I just had to have a root canal and a crown put on and it cost me 600$ the total bill was around 800$ so my insurance only paid 200$ which if I didn't have insurance I Would have found a way to get the money anyway. But anyway your best bet will be to talk to a dentist about setting up a payment plan. OR just doing a little of the work at a time so that the bill doesn't get over whelming.
Reply:That is completely shortsighted. A person's smile is a very minor factor in the realm of appearance. Granted, a person's oral hygiene can make or a break a person when it comes to their physical appearance, but it isn't permanent, and far less a setback then some other sort of impairment. I don't have dental insurance either. I just had a wisdom tooth removed. It costed $281.00 out of pocket.

Anyway, I'm considering cosmetic surgery. I don't have the money up front, but I applied for and received a credit card with just enough to pay for the procedure. I got $7500 in credit just like that, and the minimum payment when maxed-out will only be about $150. Surely that is within your reach as well, and I can't imagine dental work that is more costly than that.
Reply:Firstly, take something for the pain!

Pain can make folks think "crazy",

and I think that's a big part of what's

going on with you... no offense.

Then get some sleep, as I'm sure

with so much pain you haven't been

sleeping well, which also impairs

your judgment.

Then in the morning, take more for

the pain.

From there, try to find a Councilor

or Psychiatrist who can help you to

mentally/emotionally deal with this.

As for the problem of the dental work

itself... remember, people survived before

dentists. You can, if you have to, live with

few teeth... or you may be able to find a

dentist willing to charge lower fees for you

and put you on a long term payment plan.

You'll have to look into things.

Honestly though, it's worth staying alive

and trying to find an answer.

Remember, death is a very final kind of decision.
Reply:dental floss, brush two or three times each day.

rubbing pure Vitamin E oil on the teeth may ease the pain, or freshly cut garlic held against the painful tooth.

you could consider having some of them extracted, it's cheaper than repairing them.

if you can tolerate the pain for a long time, the nerves inside the teeth will eventually die. then they won't hurt any more.
Reply:Yes, suicide is an option but then you leave the financial burden on others....perhaps poor taxpayers, to dispose of your unsavory teeth and the husk of your body. I would much prefer to keep you alive, and suffering and would remind you daily of the mistake of having bad genetics....nasty grandparents....Take steps one at a time...have whatever your dentist can do at one step and bear the pain till the next step can be managed. Aspirin and other pain relievers are useful...I chewed cloves....and sucked on ice....My family was poor but also they didn't really care....so I know your situation....I pulled seven of my own teeth as we couldn't or maybe wouldn't afford the dentist....so suicide is a good option...remember the dentist in the M.A.S.H. movie....do it right...take the 'black'pill and be at work on time tomorrow.
Reply:I can relate. Even with good insurance, it will cost over $6000 for just my husband's teeth to be taken care of (root canal, teeth being pulled, bridges, caps etc.) and another $1000+ for mine. There's no point in attempting suicide though. We have faith that God will help us with our finances and when the time is right, we'll be able to tend to our dental issues.

Hang in there, it's certainly not worth dying over.
Reply:What medication? I want to avoid it. What injury if you don't mind. I am curious. This is horrible. It might be cathartic/therapeautic to talk about it. Talk about injury and medicine here.

I AM SO SORRY. THAT IS HORRIBLE.

HONEY. Just remember when you were a little girl and when times were better. That little girl would want you to try to find a way out of this AND still live to . .SWING on a SWINGSET . . .FEEL the SUN on her SHOULDERS . . . ENJOY a HOT SHOWER . . .

Take pain pills if you can get any. Try to keep up nutrition by drinking V-8 and expensive smoothies. You can just open them in the grocery store and act like you brought it with you or as though you intend to pay for it . . . then don't pay for it. This will help bring some personal power back into your life.

Good Luck My Love.
Reply:Call the public health department to see if they have a dentist
Reply:I understand the feeling. I have about three good teeth left, according to the checkup I just got a few days ago. I'm young and can't even imagine wearing dentures for the rest of my life. I'm going to go to the college and have students do it. I've heard good things about that. Much cheaper, and every step is supervised closely by teachers.

It's ok to feel the feeling you're having. I get it. You don't really want to kill yourself, though, or you wouldn't be asking for help. Good to talk about it. You'll get through this, and probably worse, in your life, and you'll be stronger and wiser and more interesting as a person because of these things. Things could be soooo much worse, and are for a lot of people. Count your blessings, and just start taking the steps to improve your situation. You'll feel better with each step. If you're in San Francisco, I'm going for my first appt. on tuesday. Wish me luck, and hang in there, hon. If you want to keep in touch while we go through this, I could use the support as well. Good luck to you.
Reply:Calm down. I attended a dental school and we helped sooo amny people who couldn't afford treatment at a regualr dentist. The prices at a school are much less than a regualr office. Go to a Derntla Asssisting School adn you will be treated by a liscenced dentist and (just the asssitants are students) they are usually regualr dentist who just work at the schools as a side job. They can give you prescriptions adn pain meds and will be very nice to you. We had aptients who had never been to adentist and were terrified. Also, one was assaulterd by a dentist as a child and hada fear of dentist. I held her hand the whoel time adn in the end, she was so glad that came. Most dentist are very nice friendly guys. I promise- it will be okay- most will work out a payment plan. Call information for a dentla school of Dental assisting school- this is the best option for you! We helped so many people who were in pain! They can even do extractions, dentures, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, etc. Don't be scared- if you feel pain, they will numb you until you don't! Good luck and tak ecare of this NOW before it gets worse!!! The longer you wait-the worse it will get!!
