Dental Work?

Is it safe to have dental work done when you're pregnant? By dental work, i mean minor stuff. Getting a cavity filled. Will the injected novocaine hurt the baby?

yeah i dont think your suppose to have any time of numbing medication when your pregnant because i had to get a filling done and the dentist wouldnt do it because i was pregnant
Reply:you can get all the novacaine you want! no x-rays though. or if you do get x-rays, they will double up the radiation things that you wear.

Reply:Hmm... I've had a tooth pulled and a cavity filled while pregnant. Dentists are afraid to give pregnant women any kind of meds... they can call your doctor so they can approve the pain relief shot. Ask your OB. He/she can give you a written note. Or the dentist can call them.... this way may take a bit longer.

X-rays are fine too! They do double up on the jacket thingy.
Reply:You should avoid gas and general anesthesia for a dental procedure during pregnancy. local anesthetics like novocaine are OK. but, try and wait until after your first trimester to have the work done. so, get it done during your second and before your third begins.
Reply:Just let the dentist know that you're pregnant. If they can't do a procedure then they will wait till you aren't pregnant anymore.
Reply:Your OB/GYN will usually give you a note stating exactly what dental care specifically you can and cannot get. Are you trying to do this without an OB/GYN, too? It's fine to have both an OB/GYN and a midwife. But, judging by your questions, if you have an ob/gyn, most of what your asking would be answered at your initial visit with him or her.
